Here’s everything you need to know before landing at Pico Airport, Azores.
If you’re planning a trip to the Azores, specifically Pico Island, it’s very likely that Pico Airport (PIX) will be your point of arrival.
This small regional airport is about ten minutes from the town of Madalena and serves as the main gateway for those wanting to discover Portugal’s highest mountain, the basalt vineyards, and the unique flavors of this Azorean island.
Despite its modest size, Pico Airport has been growing in importance within the Azores’ tourism scene, with an increasing number of flights and improved connections to the mainland and other islands in the archipelago.
I’ve been there myself and can confirm that, although simple, the airport serves its purpose well, it’s practical, easy to navigate, and perfectly suited to the scale of the island.
In this guide, I share everything you need to know before travelling: airlines, transport, car rentals, nearby hotels, and useful tips based on my personal experience.

Flights and Airlines at Pico Airport
Pico Airport is operated by ANA Aeroportos de Portugal and mainly serves domestic flights.
SATA Azores Airlines is the primary carrier, offering regular year-round flights, while other airlines may operate seasonal services.
Flights from the mainland usually use medium-sized aircraft, whereas flights between the islands employ smaller planes, adapted to local conditions and the runway size.

Are there direct flights from mainland Portugal to Pico Island?
Yes, there are. Throughout the year, SATA Azores Airlines operates direct flights between Lisbon and Pico, usually with two to three weekly frequencies.
During the summer, the schedule increases, offering additional flights and more convenient times.
The average flight duration is around 2 hours and 45 minutes.
It’s important to book in advance, especially if travelling during the high season (June to September), when demand is significantly higher.

Are there direct flights from other Azores islands to Pico?
Yes. Pico is connected to the neighbouring islands through regional flights operated by SATA Air Açores.
There are connections with São Miguel (Ponta Delgada), Terceira (Lajes), and Faial (Horta), providing convenient options for those planning an inter-island trip.
Shorter routes, such as between Pico and Faial, are particularly practical for travellers who prefer to avoid the ferry and save travel time.

Frequency and Peak Season: What’s the Best Time to Fly to Pico?
The best time to visit Pico is between May and September, when the weather is more stable and flight connections are more regular.
During the winter, flights may be reduced, and weather conditions can sometimes affect operations, as is common on many Azorean islands.
Additionally, if possible, book your flight in advance and choose morning departures, as early flights are generally less affected by weather-related delays.

How to Get from Pico Airport to Madalena Town?
Pico Airport is located about 9 kilometres from Madalena, the main urban and port centre of the island. The journey takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes by car.
There are no direct public transport options, but taxis and private transfers are available.
Taxis are always available outside the terminal, and for reference, the average fare to Madalena is around €15 to €20, depending on the time of day and the number of passengers.
If you’re staying in another area of the island, such as São Roque or Lajes do Pico, it’s best to arrange transport with your accommodation in advance or opt for a car rental.

Is It Worth Renting a Car at Pico Airport?
Yes, it’s definitely worth it. Pico Island isn’t very large, but the main attractions, such as Mount Pico, the vineyards of Criação Velha, the natural pools of São Roque, and the Whalers’ Museum in Lajes, are spread across the island.
Having your own car allows you to move freely and make the most of your time.
I use and recommend DiscoverCars, a platform that lets you compare prices from various local and international car rental companies.
At Pico Airport, you’ll find counters for companies like Ilha Verde, Autatlantis, and Wayzor, among others.
Don’t forget to book in advance, especially during the summer months, when availability is limited.

Is It Possible to Spend the Night at Pico Airport?
Pico Airport is small and not equipped for overnight stays. The terminal closes at night, after the last departure or arrival of the day.
If you have an early morning flight, the best option is to stay in Madalena or Santa Luzia, ensuring a short transfer the next morning.
I stayed at Porto Velho Boutique Lodge and I recommend it.

Available Services and Facilities
Despite its compact size, Pico Airport offers the essentials:
- Information desk and check-in for SATA Air Açores
- Vending machines for drinks and snacks
- ATM
- Free Wi-Fi
- Free parking
- Car rental counters
The terminal is clean and well-organized. There is a café near the entrance and small duty-free shops in the departure area.
Connections to Other Islands: How to Take the Ferry to Faial or São Jorge?
Pico Airport is strategically located for those wanting to explore more than one island. From Madalena, daily ferries depart to Faial (Horta), with the crossing taking only 25 minutes.
There are also regular connections to São Jorge, operated by Atlânticoline, departing from São Roque. This makes it perfectly possible to plan an inter-island itinerary starting or ending on Pico.

Location and Distance to Key Points on the Island
- Madalena: 9 km (10–15 minutes)
- São Roque do Pico: 25 km (25 minutes)
- Lajes do Pico: 35 km (35–40 minutes)
- Mount Pico: 17 km (20 minutes)
- Wine Museum: 6 km (8 minutes)
The roads are good and well-signposted, although some areas can be narrow. Driving on Pico is, in fact, one of the best ways to enjoy the island’s natural scenery.

- Book your flight and car in advance, especially during the summer.
- Bring waterproof clothing, as the weather changes quickly in the Azores.
- If connecting through another island, check if your ticket is “inter-island protected” (to ensure free rebooking in case of delays).
- Always have a plan B for bad weather, because Pico is stunning in the sun, but also mysterious and photogenic in the fog.
