If you’re wondering where to eat on Pico Island, know that the local food is as intense as the island’s basalt cliffs and ocean views.

During my trip, I had lunch overlooking the Faial Channel, dinner surrounded by the scent of burning wood, and tasted flavors that can only be found in the Azores. From fish caught that very morning to beef raised on the island’s green pastures, everything tastes more authentic, more real.

I know the municipality of Madalena best, so my restaurant recommendations focus on that area. That said, there are certainly other great places to eat on Pico, I just haven’t tried them yet. On my next trip, I’ll explore more regions and update this guide with new foodie finds.

Some people visit Pico for its wine or volcanic landscapes, but I came for the food too. Between cozy bakeries, local pubs, and restaurants serving freshly caught fish with true Azorean soul, I found places where flavor matters more than luxury.

So, in this article, I’m sharing my favorite spots to eat well on Pico Island, whether it’s a quick lunch in Madalena, a grilled fish dinner, a cocktail with local gin, or a comforting homemade meal that feels like a hug.

Where to Eat on Pico Island, Azores

Pastelaria Pastella

If you find yourself in Madalena around lunchtime, Pastelaria Pastella is a must-stop. It’s a simple, family-run spot where the smell of freshly cooked food invites you in.

Everything here is homemade: the chicken salad was amazing, the steak was cooked just right, and the soup, different every day, warmed me up every single time.

It’s the kind of place where time slows down, where you’ll want to linger a bit longer, chatting over your coffee. A true little refuge for relaxed lunches on the island.

Don’t miss it! Add Pastella to your itinerary and let yourself be won over by the genuine flavors of Pico.

📍Location: Largo Jaime Ferreira, Carmo, 9950-329 Madalena.
💡 Stop by for breakfast too, as the cakes are excellent, and the house specialty is their brownies.

Pub Arruda

Still in Madalena, Pub Arruda is one of those places that remind you of Sunday lunches: simple food, but made with care. The service is buffet-style, with both meat and fish dishes, all carrying that comforting homemade flavor.

This is where I first tried the famous pimenta da terra, the red, spicy condiment that Azoreans use in almost everything.

I had cheese with pimenta da terra and also cheese with fig jam, an unlikely combination, but full of Azorean flavor.

📍Location: R. Atrás do Castelo Beco, Carmo, 9950-340 Madalena
💡Tip: Go early, preferably right at opening, as this buffet is very popular. If you can’t get a table, ask for takeaway and enjoy your meal at your accommodation.

Cella Bar

Cella Bar is one of those spots that perfectly combine good music and great food. I visited during the Cordas Festival, and the live concert set the perfect rhythm for the evening.

The menu at Cella Bar ranges from tapas to full meals. I tried a bit of everything, but only managed to photograph the cheese and cocktails. The rest of the food? Well… I completely forgot to take pictures, hunger and excitement got the better of me.

One of my favorite experiences was trying the bar’s house gin, which was excellent, the perfect companion to the music and relaxed atmosphere.

So, if you’re looking for a place to enjoy live music, sip quality cocktails, snack on tapas, or even have a relaxed dinner, Cella Bar is a must-visit in Madalena.

Want to feel the island’s energy with live music and local flavors? This is the spot!

📍Location: Rua Da Barca, Carmo, 9950-303 Madalena

O Cinco Restaurant

For a more special dinner, O Cinco is a safe bet. Modern, located in the town center, with a short but carefully crafted menu.

I ordered the tuna steak, and there’s no other word for it: divine. Perfectly grilled, juicy, and with that hint of salt that only skilled chefs master.

The atmosphere is cozy, the service attentive, and there’s a good selection of Pico wines for those who want to try. I stuck with the restaurant’s famous lemonade, and I have no regrets.

To finish, a decadent chocolate mousse, rich and intense, just like Pico Island.

📍Location: R. Carlos Dabney 5A, Carmo, 9950-327 Madalena.
💡 Tip: Make a reservation, especially for dinner, as the restaurant is small and very popular.

Practical Tips for Choosing Restaurants on Pico Island

  • Opt for places that serve fresh fish, as it’s one of the island’s greatest treasures.
  • Always try the local cheese, with or without pimenta da terra.
  • If you see the “regional products” symbol on the menu, it’s a sign of quality.
  • In smaller restaurants, ask for the dish of the day, which usually offers the best value.
  • And of course, pair your meal with a glass of Pico wine and finish with a shot of neveda liqueur.
