SATA Azores Airlines is the main airline of the Azores, connecting the archipelago to mainland Portugal, Madeira, and various international destinations in Europe and North America.
Founded in 1941, the airline has a long tradition of serving the island communities, playing a vital role in linking the Azores to the rest of the world.
Azores Airlines is distinguished by its commitment to hospitality and Azorean culture. On board, passengers can experience Azorean cuisine, with meals prepared from fresh local products. The company values sustainability and environmental preservation, reflecting the importance of protecting the unique natural landscapes of the Azores.
Additionally, the airline facilitates access to the archipelago through programs like the Azores Stopover, allowing travelers to explore the islands as part of a transatlantic journey.
Currently, Azores Airlines comprises two airlines: SATA Air Açores and Azores Airlines.
In this article, I share our experience flying with Azores Airlines, along with all the information deemed important for those traveling with this airline for the first time.
Fasten your seatbelt and enjoy the journey.
Our experience flying with Azores Airlines

I recently had the opportunity to fly with Azores Airlines from Porto to New York (JFK) on a direct flight operated by EuroAtlantic Airways.
Since it was an intercontinental flight, it was necessary to go to the airport check-in counter to register passport details.
We also had to show our return ticket and answer some usual questions, such as when we last visited the United States.
The boarding process went smoothly, and the flight itself was comfortable. The plane was cozy, and meals were served on board. On the way out, breakfast and snacks were provided, and on the return trip, dinner and snacks.
There was in-flight entertainment, including movies and music, which helped pass the time. Overall, the Azores Airlines flight was quite comfortable and enjoyable.
Everything you need to know before flying with Azores Airlines

When can online check-in be done?
Typically, SATA Azores online check-in is available from 48 hours up to 1 hour and 15 minutes before the flight departure. However, there are some situations where online check-in is not possible.
For example, on connecting flights from SATA Air Açores to Azores Airlines, as well as on intercontinental or European flights where passport details are required.

Do they serve free meals on Azores Airlines?
On Azores Airlines, meals depend on the flight duration.
For flights over 3 hours, a hot meal is served, including a starter, dessert, and drinks.
Also, for flights under 3 hours, a snack and beverages are provided. Note that meals are not served on flights between the Azores islands.

Where does Azores Airlines fly?
From Portugal, Azores Airlines offers direct flights from Lisbon, Porto, Faro, the Azores, and Madeira.
Azores Airlines flies from Francisco Sá Carneiro Airport (OPO) to New York (JFK), Toronto (YYZ), Boston (BOS), and Terceira Island (TER).
There are direct flights from Humberto Delgado Airport (LIS) to Boston, from Faro Airport (FAO) to Ponta Delgada (PDL).
From Madeira Airport, flights are available to New York, Toronto, and Boston.
From Ponta Delgada Airport, you can find several flights to Europe, including Milan, London, Barcelona, Paris, Bilbao, and Frankfurt.
For Africa, Azores Airlines operates direct flights from Ponta Delgada to Cape Verde, flights between Cape Verde and Boston with a stop in Ponta Delgada, and flights between London and Cape Verde via Ponta Delgada.
Additionally, for North America, there are flights from Ponta Delgada to Boston, New York, Toronto, Montreal, and from Terceira Island to Boston, Oakland, New York, and Toronto.

What is the Azores Stopover?
The Azores Stopover is an option that allows travelers to take a break of up to 7 days in the Azores at no extra cost during a trip between North America and Europe, or vice versa.
Here’s how it works: when booking a flight operated by Azores Airlines between these two continents, the Stopover option will automatically appear.
Travelers can choose to stop either in São Miguel or Terceira Island, on the outbound or return leg of their trip.
Additionally, travelers can opt for just the flights or include experiences through Azores Getaways, a partner of Azores Airlines, which offers activities to enhance the visit.
It’s a great way to explore the natural beauty of the Azores without significantly altering the travel itinerary.
To book the Azores Stopover, follow these simple steps:
- Book your flight on the Azores Airlines website for a trip between North America and Europe (or vice versa).
- If all flights between the origin and destination are operated by Azores Airlines, the Stopover option will be suggested.
- Choose to stop in either São Miguel or Terceira Island.
- Decide if you want only the flights or if you’d like to add experiences. If you choose experiences, you’ll be redirected to Azores Getaways’ site to organize activities for your stopover.

Negative aspects of flying with Azores Airlines
I did not find any negative aspects when flying with Azores Airlines. The ticket booking process on the website was straightforward, the flight departed on time, and both boarding and the in-flight experience were smooth.
Additionally, Azores Airlines offered the most economical prices for direct flights from Porto to New York.
Therefore, there is absolutely nothing negative to report.

How does SATA’s inter-island routing work?
SATA’s inter-island routing is a very useful service for those living in the Azores.
Basically, if someone is a resident of the Azores or a student traveling between mainland Portugal or Madeira and one of the Azorean islands, they can request SATA to arrange the inter-island flight without additional cost.
For instance, if the flight is from Lisbon to São Miguel but the person needs to go to another island, like Faial, SATA will handle arranging the inter-island flight without extra charges.
Of course, this depends on seat availability on the flights, but it’s a significant help for those needing to travel between the islands after a flight from the mainland or Madeira.
