Looking for where to stay in Ella, Sri Lanka? Hotels with mountain views, close to waterfalls, or near the town center?
Then you’re in the right place, because I’ve put together this guide with everything you need to know to choose the best area to stay in Ella, including the top neighborhoods, the best hotels for every type of trip, and my experience at one of the most peaceful places I’ve ever stayed: Ella Mount Heaven.
Ella is one of those destinations that wins you over slowly.
It’s small, surrounded by lush greenery, with hiking trails that start almost at the hotel door, and a relaxed atmosphere that contrasts with bigger cities like Kandy or Colombo.
Many people stop in Ella just to see the Nine Arch Bridge or hike up Little Adam’s Peak, but the truth is that the town has much more to offer. And choosing the right place to stay can completely transform your trip.
I realized while exploring the area that location makes all the difference.
Some roads are narrow and steep, tuk-tuks take longer than you’d expect, and not every hotel has unobstructed valley views. The good news? There are excellent places to stay in Ella, both in the center and in quieter hillside areas, and at prices for every budget.
So in this article, you’ll find real, practical suggestions to help you decide where to stay in Ella. Shall we find the perfect hotel for your trip?

- Want to be close to restaurants and cafés? Stay in Ella Town — it’s practical, and you can walk everywhere.
- Prefer nature and complete peace? Look for places along Ravana Falls Road or on the hillsides surrounding the town.
- Don’t want to rely on tuk-tuks? Stay in the town center or along a road with easy access.
- Traveling on a budget? There are good options with breakfast included, such as several mid-range hotels with mountain views.
- Visiting during high season (December to March / July and August)? Book early, because the hotels with views sell out fast.

Staying at Ella Mount Heaven
I stayed at Ella Mount Heaven, and I can say it was one of the most peaceful experiences of my trip to Sri Lanka. The hotel is perched on a hill, away from the town center, but with such a beautiful view that you just want to stay on the balcony, listening to the birds and watching the morning mist rise.
The room I stayed in had a large balcony, perfect for sipping Ceylon tea before starting the day.
Also, the bed was comfortable, the shower had consistent hot water (not always guaranteed in Sri Lanka), and the quiet in the evening was absolute. At night, all you could hear was nature and, occasionally, a tuk-tuk passing in the distance.
Breakfast was another highlight. Generous, with fresh fruit, pancakes, roti, eggs, and tea. It wasn’t fancy, but it was made with care.

The staff was always friendly, without being over the top, and ready to help arrange transportation to the Nine Arch Bridge or Little Adam’s Peak.
Also, the road up to the hotel is steep, like many in Ella, but tuk-tuks handle it without any problem. For anyone who values peace, views, and a “retreat” feeling, this hotel is an excellent choice.
If I went back to Ella, I would stay here again, especially to relax after the hikes.
