So, I decided to ignore the GPS and go check out what it was. And you know what, the detour was worth it!
So, in this article, I’ll tell you how you can visit not only the famous statue but also the Genetically Modified Little Mermaid, the differences between the two, and whether it’s worth visiting them.

What are the two Little Mermaid statues in Copenhagen?

The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid statue was inspired by Hans Christian Andersen’s children’s book and was created by Edvard Eriksen in 1913. It quickly became one of the symbols of Denmark’s capital.
Made of bronze, it is placed on a rock on the shores of the Baltic Sea.
Much has been said about this artwork, such as acts of vandalism it has suffered or the size of the statue.
I personally enjoyed the walk to the statue’s location, as it is a bit away from the city center, and getting to know this piece of art.
Fun fact: Did you know that the statue’s birthday is celebrated? Take note, it’s on August 23rd, in case you’re in the city at that time.
Location: Langelinie, 2100 København Ø, Denmark.
The Genetically Modified Little Mermaid by Bjørn Nørgaard (Den Genmodificerede Lille Havfrue)

The Genetically Modified Little Mermaid, or Den Genmodificerede Lille Havfrue, locally known as the younger sister of the Little Mermaid, appears similar from afar, but up close, the two sculptures are very different.
It is part of a group of statues called the Genetically Modified Paradise.
The author of this work is Bjørn Nørgaard, a Danish professor who was inspired by Copenhagen’s iconic statue to create a group of sculptures that sparked conversation.
This includes a Triumphal Arch (weighing 40 tons), the Tripartite Capital, and the Pregnant Man, along with statues named after biblical figures: the Genetically Modified Madonna, Adam, Christ, Mary Magdalene, and Eve.
All have distorted and twisted forms. If the intention was to provoke, I believe it was achieved.
Location: Langelinie Allé 17, 2100 København, Dinamarca (about 750 meters from the ither statue).
