Thissamaharama (often shortened to Tissa) is the most popular area for visitors to Yala. It’s a small, well-organized town with restaurants, shops, banks, and hotels for all budgets. On top of that, the location is excellent for those seeking comfort, easy access to the main road, and good value for money.
Many safaris start here because it’s convenient for operators to pick up travelers from their hotels.

If your main goal is to reach the Yala National Park entrance quickly, then Kirinda is the right area. It’s quieter and more rural than Tissa, with some hotels set in nature. From here, it takes about 15–20 minutes to get to the Palatupana gate.

Staying at Kithala Resort – Thema Collection
I stayed at Kithala Resort – Thema Collection and quickly realized it was the right accommodation for visiting Yala.
The hotel is surrounded by green fields and plantations, creating a distinctive atmosphere from the moment you arrive, while still being close to the main road, which makes safari logistics very convenient.
Also, the room I stayed in was spacious, comfortable, and very well organized. The bed was large and firm, there was plenty of space for luggage, and a pleasant balcony with a view of the garden.
The cleanliness was consistent, and the air conditioning worked flawlessly, essential in the Sri Lankan heat.
Also, the pool was a very pleasant surprise. I spent some time there in the late afternoon, recharging after waking up early for the park safari.
The hotel restaurant served very good meals. Breakfast included fresh fruit, local dishes, roti, mild curries, and lighter options.
In the evening, I tried the buffet and particularly enjoyed the dhal and sautéed vegetables.
The staff were always friendly, helpful, and quick to assist, whether it was clarifying safari schedules or arranging transportation.
The location also worked out very well. From the hotel’s entrance to the safari meeting point was just a few minutes, and the road was easy to navigate.
In addition, the hotel is close to Tissa Lake, a great spot for an evening walk.
If I were to return to Yala, I would stay at Kithala Resort again, as it combines comfort, a peaceful atmosphere, and great value, making it an excellent base for those who want to explore the park at a relaxed pace.

How Many Days Are Needed to Visit Yala?
Two nights are the minimum to enjoy a safari at a relaxed pace, but three nights allow for two safaris at different times and some time to rest at the hotel.
However, if you want to combine Yala with the Tissamaharama or Kataragama area, three to four nights work well.

Is It Safe to Visit Yala?
