During my trip through Saguenay-Lac-Saint-Jean, I was lucky enough to explore both the banks of the stunning Saguenay Fjord and the beaches and towns surrounding the vast Lake Saint-Jean.
That means I stayed in a variety of accommodations, from charming inns to a historic village turned into a hotel-museum.
Believe me, the range of lodging experiences is one of the highlights of this part of Canada.
Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean is often left off the typical tourist route, but it truly deserves a spot on your itinerary, specially if you’re into nature, local culture, and peaceful settings.
And just like in other larger cities or regions, choosing the right place to stay makes all the difference.
So don’t worry, this article has you covered. I’ll walk you through the best areas to stay, top accommodations with great value and location, and even a few unique options, like sleeping in a bubble suspended in the forest.

Where to Stay in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean
The Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region is vast, so ideally, you should choose more than one accommodation during your trip.
Here are some suggestions. In general, the best places to stay fall into three main areas:
- Lac Saint-Jean shores – perfect in summer and for water activities
- Saguenay Fjord area – dramatic landscapes and hiking trails
- Towns and cities with cultural offerings, such as Saguenay, Alma, and Roberval
Where to Stay at Lac Saint-Jean
Lac Saint-Jean is a vast, calm lake with sandy beaches and warm waters in the summer.
In other words, it’s perfect for families, anyone looking to relax, or those who want to explore the famous Véloroute des Bleuets, the circular cycling route around the lake.
In this area, I stayed at the Village historique de Val-Jalbert, and I highly recommend it. It felt like sleeping in a ghost village, but with all the modern comforts.
Imagine waking up in a 1920s house, in a perfectly preserved village where the streets, buildings, and even the furniture transport you to another era.
That’s exactly the experience at Village historique de Val-Jalbert, one of the most iconic places in Québec and without a doubt one of the most unique accommodations in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean.
This former industrial settlement was born in the early 20th century, built around a pulp mill powered by the mighty Ouiatchouan Falls, which stand over 70 meters tall (even higher than Niagara Falls!).
For years, it was a thriving community with a school, a general store, a post office, and dozens of residential homes. But after the mill shut down in 1927, the village was slowly abandoned.
Today, Val-Jalbert is an open-air museum. And the best part?
You can actually spend the night in the heart of the village, in historic buildings that have been carefully restored and updated with modern comforts.
What to Do During Your Stay at Village historique de Val-Jalbert
When you stay at Val-Jalbert, you get unlimited access to the historic park for the entire duration of your visit, so you can explore everything at your own pace. Here are some activities and experiences you won’t want to miss:
- Ride the panoramic funicular up to the top of the impressive Ouiatchouan Falls
- Join guided tours with actors who bring the village’s daily life in 1927 back to life
- Visit the old school, general store, convent, and the factory manager’s house
- Dine at Restaurant du Moulin, serving dishes inspired by regional cuisine, featuring local products like the famous tourtière
- Enjoy stargazing and see the illuminated waterfall at night!
Where to Stay at the Saguenay Fjord
The Saguenay Fjord is one of the most breathtaking natural landscapes in eastern Canada. Its viewpoints, hiking trails, and kayaking tours are must-dos.
Accommodations with fjord views are very popular, so it’s best to book well in advance.
I stayed at Auberge du Cap-au-Leste and Battures – Hôtel sur le Fjord-du-Saguenay, and I highly recommend both.
Staying at Auberge du Cap-au-Leste
Auberge du Cap-au-Leste is one of those places that make you stop, take a deep breath, and forget the world outside.
Perched atop a cliff with a direct view of the Saguenay Fjord, it offers one of the most stunning landscapes in the region, especially at dawn, when the mist dances over the water and the silence is almost complete.
Located in the small village of Sainte-Rose-du-Nord, about 25 km from Saguenay (Chicoutimi district), it feels like a world apart.
The inn has a rustic style, with natural wood décor, crackling fireplaces in the common areas, and huge windows facing the fjord.
It’s the kind of place where you just want to sit on a lounge chair, wrapped in a blanket with a warm cup in hand, and simply… stay.
You can choose from different types of accommodations:
- Rooms with fjord views, perfect for couples or travelers seeking tranquility;
- Independent wooden cabins, ideal for families or groups, featuring a fully equipped kitchen and fireplace;
- Dormitory-style lodging (more basic and affordable), popular with hikers and backpackers.
Besides the accommodations, Auberge du Cap-au-Leste offers a range of amenities and activities designed to help guests fully enjoy their connection with nature:
- A restaurant with panoramic views, serving seasonal dishes inspired by regional cuisine;
- A Finnish sauna and spa overlooking the fjord, one of the most popular experiences among guests;
- Private hiking trails starting from the property that lead down to the water or follow the cliffs;
- The chance to watch the sunset right from the terrace.
Staying at Battures – Hôtel sur le Fjord-du-Saguenay
Located just a few kilometers from La Baie, Battures – Hôtel sur le Fjord-du-Saguenay is an excellent choice for those who want to stay close to nature without giving up comfort and good service.
The view over Baie des Ha! Ha!, part of the fjord, is simply breathtaking.
This charming hotel is surrounded by forest. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and simply decorated with an emphasis on natural materials. Many have balconies or large windows facing the fjord.
Another highlight of Battures is the O’Batillage restaurant, which focuses on regional flavors and local ingredients.
The menu changes with the seasons and highlights products from the Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean region. I tried (and highly recommend!) the shrimp tacos, fresh pasta with chicken and pesto, and for dessert, crème brûlée.
The restaurant is known for its quality, and even if you’re not staying at the hotel, it’s worth stopping by for a meal with a view.
The hotel’s location provides easy access to outdoor activities year-round. In the summer, guests can go kayaking on the fjord, hike nearby trails, or take boat tours. In the winter, there are snowshoeing trails, ice fishing, and other seasonal activities.
Additionally, for those traveling by bike, the hotel is certified “Bienvenue cyclistes!” and offers secure bike storage and technical support for cyclists.
Extra Tip: Stay at Parc Aventures Cap Jaseux
Ever imagined sleeping in a bubble, nestled among the trees with a view of the fjord?
Although I didn’t stay overnight at Parc Aventures Cap Jaseux, I had the chance to visit, and I was genuinely impressed by what I saw.
The setting is truly unique: dense forest, complete silence, and in the background, the majestic Saguenay Fjord. Nature is all around, and you can feel it as soon as you enter the park.
In other words, this is the perfect place for those looking for an out-of-the-ordinary experience with a deep connection to nature.
The accommodations are diverse and incredibly original, designed to offer a memorable stay. The most famous one is undoubtedly the transparent bubble suspended between trees, where you literally sleep under the stars with a view of the fjord.
But there are also geodesic domes, treehouses, rustic wooden cabins, and even more traditional campsites.
It’s clear that this is one of those places where the accommodation is part of the experience. The infrastructure is well maintained, with marked trails, rest areas, and viewing platforms overlooking the water.
Beyond the unique overnight stays, Cap Jaseux also offers a variety of outdoor activities, such as treetop adventure courses with ziplines, kayaking on the fjord, hiking trails, and via ferrata routes.
The park is located near the town of Saint-Fulgence, on the north shore of the fjord, about a 30-minute drive from downtown Saguenay (Chicoutimi).
Access is easy, and the park mainly operates from spring through fall, so it’s a good idea to check opening dates if planning a trip outside the peak season.

What’s the Best Area to Stay in Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean?
It depends on the season and what you’re looking for in your trip.
For beaches and summer activities, Lac-Saint-Jean is the best choice.
But if you want dramatic landscapes and hiking trails, go for the Fjord du Saguenay.
Also, bigger towns like Saguenay (Chicoutimi and La Baie) or Alma are great if you’re looking for more amenities.
How Much Do Hotels Cost in the Region?
Prices vary greatly depending on the location and time of year.
In summer, expect to pay between CAD 90 and CAD 150 per night for mid-range hotels.
However, more unique accommodations like Val-Jalbert or Cap-au-Leste can exceed CAD 180 during peak season.
How many days are needed to visit Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean?
I recommend at least 5 to 7 days to explore the lake, the fjord, and some charming villages at a relaxed pace. If you have more time, take advantage to do hiking, bike riding, or simply relax on the region’s beaches and spas.

Yes, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean is a very safe area, whether you are traveling alone or with family. People are welcoming, and the atmosphere is peaceful, even in more remote spots.
