Where to Stay in Lugo: The Right Areas, Hotels Worth Your Time, and a Historic Center That Surprises.

Lugo doesn’t usually top the list when it comes to getaways in Galicia. It doesn’t have the tourist pull of Santiago de Compostela, nor the urban pace of A Coruña, and perhaps that’s exactly what makes it special.

The city revolves around its Roman walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which encircle the historic center and set the rhythm for anyone visiting.

Most points of interest lie within the walls or just a few minutes’ walk away, making the choice of accommodation particularly important.

In this guide, I share everything you need to know to decide where to stay in Lugo: the most convenient areas for sleeping, what to expect from each neighborhood, and hotel suggestions for different types of trips.

I also include my personal experience at one of the places I stayed, with an honest review of what worked and what left some doubts.

Lugo is an excellent option for a two- or three-day getaway, especially for those who enjoy cities that are easy to explore on foot, good food, and history without tourist filters.

And, as with any destination, choosing the right place to stay makes all the difference in the experience.

Quick Tips for Choosing Where to Stay in Lugo

Before looking at specific hotels and neighborhoods, there are a few key points to keep in mind:

  • Historic center is king: staying inside or next to the walls makes everything easier.
  • Lugo is best explored on foot: location matters more than excessive luxury.
  • Parking can be tricky inside the walls. Always check in advance.
  • Hotels outside the center are cheaper but require commuting.
  • You don’t need to switch hotels to explore the city, as Lugo is compact.

If the goal is to sleep well, step outside, and start exploring right away, the center is the best choice.

Hotels and the Best Areas to Stay in Lugo

In practice, Lugo can be divided into four key areas for visitors:

  1. Historic center (inside the walls)
  2. Modern city center (outside the walls)
  3. Train station area
  4. More distant residential neighborhoods

Each area caters to a different type of traveler.

Historic Center of Lugo – Staying Inside the Roman Walls

Staying in the historic center is the most convenient option and, in my opinion, the most interesting. It’s also the most expensive.

Here you’ll find:

  • The Cathedral of Santa María
  • The Roman walls
  • Traditional restaurants
  • Tapas bars
  • Small local shops

At night, the atmosphere is calm. Lugo is not a noisy city, even during peak season.

A carefully restored historic building. Spacious rooms, attentive service, and an unbeatable location. Perfect for those who value context and comfort.

Good value for money

  • Hotel Méndez Núñez
Functional, clean, and well-located. It doesn’t wow with design, but it delivers everything it promises.

Traditional Hotels

  • Hotel España
A Lugo classic. Simple, honest, and with decades of history. Ideal for those who prefer no-frills accommodation.

Modern Center of Lugo – Outside the Walls, but Close to Everything

Outside the walls lies the city’s more modern area, with wide avenues, shops, and newer hotels.

It’s a good option for those who:

  • Are traveling by car
  • Want easy parking
  • Prefer more modern hotels

Good value for money

  • Eurostars Gran Hotel Lugo
Spacious rooms, good soundproofing, and a solid breakfast. One of the best hotels in the city in this category.

  • Hotel Forum Ceao
A bit further from the center, but appealing for those traveling by car through Galicia.

Train Station Area – Convenient for Those Arriving Without a Car

Lugo’s train station is relatively close to the center, but it’s not the most charming part of the city.

It’s functional, and nothing more.

When it makes sense to stay here:

  • Late arrivals
  • Very early departures
  • Train travel

Staying at Loft Lugo Centro – My Experience

I stayed at Loft Lugo Centro, and overall, it was a solid choice for a short stay in Lugo.

The accommodation is in an apartment building right by the walls, in a convenient area for both those arriving by car and those who prefer to explore the city on foot. Location is one of its biggest strengths, as it allows easy access to the historic center without any hassle.

The apartment had a fully equipped kitchen, which makes it easy to prepare meals or breakfast, although we didn’t end up using it. For travelers with a car, having a garage is a clear advantage, especially in a city where parking near the center isn’t always simple.

In terms of comfort, the experience was solid. Nothing extraordinary, but also no major issues.

Check-in was done in advance and entirely online. Instructions for picking up the keys on-site were simple and clear, and the whole process went smoothly.

Although I never met the host in person, I always received messages and support throughout the stay, which gave a sense of security and constant attention.

It’s not a boutique-style accommodation, nor does it try to be. It’s functional, practical, and designed for those who want a good rest after a day exploring the city, leaving the budget for other experiences. For a short getaway, I would stay at Loft Lugo Centro again without hesitation.

Accommodation in Lugo: Hotels vs. Apartments

Lugo has a growing number of holiday apartments, especially within the walls.

Hotels are a better option if:

  • You’re staying only one or two nights
  • You want reception and support
  • You prefer not to handle logistics

Apartments make sense if:

  • You’re traveling with family
  • You’re staying more than three nights
  • You want more space

For short stays, I still prefer hotels.
