Along Old Matara Road, you’ll find hotels facing the sea, some almost built on the rocks. It’s also a quieter area, perfect for relaxing, watching the sunset, and listening to the waves.

Unawatuna is just a few minutes’ drive from Galle, making it a great option for those seeking tropical beaches, beachfront bars, and affordable accommodations. It’s not exactly Galle, but many travelers stay here and visit the fort during the day.

Staying at Jetwing Lighthouse Hotel
I stayed at Jetwing Lighthouse and can say it was one of the best accommodations on my trip to Sri Lanka.
It’s a historic hotel designed by architect Geoffrey Bawa, and that shows in every detail: wide lines, natural light, local materials, and a seamless integration with the sea.
The room I stayed in had a balcony facing the Indian Ocean, with the constant sound of waves crashing against the rocks.
The bed was very comfortable, the shower had consistently hot water, and there was plenty of space to organize everything with ease. Cleanliness was impeccable, and the overall atmosphere was very peaceful.
The common areas are remarkable, with the main pool offering direct ocean views and several loungers spaced far enough apart to ensure privacy. Also, the restaurant served traditional Sri Lankan dishes as well as international options.
The staff was always friendly and attentive without being intrusive. The location is perfect: close enough to the city center for quick access, yet far enough to guarantee complete silence at night.
So, when I return to Galle, I would choose this hotel without a second thought. Jetwing Lighthouse manages to be elegant without being formal, striking that rare balance between comfort, view, and a relaxed atmosphere.

Three nights are enough to explore the fort, stroll along the sea, visit the beaches, and enjoy the hotel. If you have more time, four nights allow for trips to Unawatuna, Dalawella, and Mirissa.

Is Galle a Safe City?
Yes. In fact, Galle Fort is considered one of the safest places in Sri Lanka, very calm and well organized. Outside the fort, the main streets are busy, yet the atmosphere remains relaxed. At night, however, I recommend using tuk-tuks for longer distances.
Choosing where to stay in Galle is essential to make the most of the city. Between the historic fort, tropical beaches, and quieter coastal areas, there are options for every travel style.
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Jetwing Lighthouse , which showed how a good hotel can elevate the experience in such a beautiful destination.
