Choosing where to stay in Albufeira is a decision that directly shapes the travel experience, and this becomes even more evident when considering the all-inclusive resort option.

Over the past few years, I have returned to the Algarve several times and experienced different types of accommodation in the region, including some of the most well-known all-inclusive resorts in Albufeira.

That experience quickly makes one thing clear: not all hotels offer the same kind of stay.

At first glance, Albufeira may seem like a simple destination. In reality, however, it is divided into several distinct areas with very different characteristics: the historic centre by the sea, livelier areas associated with nightlife, and quieter coastal zones where many of the larger resorts and hotels are located.

It is precisely in these areas that many of the all-inclusive options can be found, designed for those looking for a more comfortable stay, with meals included, direct access to beaches or swimming pools, and less need for constant travel around the region.

The issue is that not all resorts are well located, and this is one of the most important decisions.

This guide brings together the best areas to stay in Albufeira, with specific hotel suggestions, including all-inclusive resorts I have already tested, and helps you understand where it truly makes sense to book depending on the type of trip.

To complement your planning, it is also worth checking the complete guide on best things to do in Albufeira, where beaches, trails and experiences are gathered to help you make the most of the region beyond the hotel.

How to Choose the Best Area to Stay in Albufeira

Before booking a hotel, it is important to understand that Albufeira is not a uniform destination. The atmosphere changes significantly from one area to another, and these differences can completely shape the travel experience.

First-time visitors to the city often prefer staying in the historic centre, a relatively compact area close to Praia dos Pescadores. Here you will find restaurants, bars and easy access to the beach, making it possible to explore the town almost entirely on foot.

To the east of the centre lies the Oura area, known for the famous “The Strip Albufeira”. This is the city’s nightlife hub and home to many hotels and tourist apartments. For those looking for a lively atmosphere and late-night bars, this can be a good choice.

To the west of the historic centre, there are quieter areas such as São Rafael and Galé, where the cliffs are more dramatic and some of the region’s most luxurious hotels can be found.

The choice of area depends mainly on the type of trip:

  • first visit → historic centre
  • nightlife → Oura / Strip
  • beaches and tranquillity → São Rafael or Galé
  • well-located middle ground → Forte de São João

With this in mind, choosing the right hotel becomes much easier.

Historic Centre: The Best Area for a First Visit

The historic centre remains the most popular area for those visiting Albufeira for the first time. Its whitewashed streets slope down towards the sea, forming a small maze of restaurants, cafés and terraces that still retain part of the atmosphere of the old fishing village.

The heart of this area is Praça da República, located just a few metres above Praia dos Pescadores.

Staying here allows you to explore much of the city on foot. From the historic centre, it is also easy to reach Albufeira Marina, the starting point for several boat trips along the Algarve coast.

In terms of accommodation, this area combines hotels in privileged seafront locations with smaller units embedded in the fabric of the old town. A well-positioned example is Hotel Sol e Mar Albufeira – Adults Only, practically set above the beach, with direct views over the bay—one of the most central locations possible.

For those looking for a more comfortable option with a slightly quieter setting away from the busiest streets, Hotel Indigo Albufeira is an interesting alternative, offering a central location with a more refined atmosphere.

The main drawback of this area is the level of activity during peak season. In the summer months, especially July and August, it can become quite lively at night.

Oura and The Strip: the liveliest area in town

The Oura area is known for its lively atmosphere and the high concentration of bars and nightclubs along The Strip Albufeira. This avenue has become one of the busiest nightlife hubs in the Algarve, especially during the summer months.

Those who choose to stay in this area are usually looking for exactly that: proximity to bars, music and restaurants open late into the night.

Just a few minutes’ walk away is Praia da Oura, a relatively sheltered and very popular beach among visitors.

During one of my stays in the city, I stayed at Grand Muthu Forte da Oura on an all-inclusive basis. The location makes it easy to reach both the beach and The Strip, making it a practical base for those who want to enjoy the livelier side of Albufeira.

For those who prefer a quieter atmosphere, however, it may be worth considering areas slightly further away from the nightlife zone.

Forte de São João: a balanced location between beach and town centre

Located between the historic centre and Oura, the Forte de São João area is one that often goes unnoticed by many visitors, yet it offers a very balanced location.

From here, it is possible to walk to both the historic centre and the Oura area, while still staying close to the beach. Praia do Forte de São João is just a few minutes away from several hotels and tourist apartments.

During one of my trips to the Algarve, I stayed at Monica Isabel Beach Club, a 3-star hotel operating on an all-inclusive basis.

The hotel is practically on the beach and allows easy access to the town centre in just a few minutes, making it simple to explore restaurants and viewpoints without constantly relying on a car.

This area works especially well for those who plan to use Albufeira as a base to explore other beaches in the region.

São Rafael and Galé: luxury hotels by the cliffs

To the west of Albufeira, the landscape gradually becomes wilder. The cliffs take on more dramatic shapes, small hidden coves appear, and the atmosphere becomes noticeably quieter than in the town centre.

In this area, you will find some of the best hotels in Albufeira for those looking for a more exclusive stay. One of the most well-known examples is W Algarve, a contemporary resort with wide Atlantic views and quick access to several beaches along the coast.

Another reference hotel is Vila Joya, known both for its privileged seaside location and its Michelin-starred restaurant.

For those looking for a more mid-range option, offering more tranquillity than the town centre but without entering the luxury segment, an interesting choice is Hotel Baía Grande.

This 4-star hotel offers different board options, from bed and breakfast to half board and full board, allowing the stay to be adapted to different types of trips.

Its location, close to the São Rafael area, works well for those who want to explore beaches such as Praia de São Rafael without staying in the busiest part of town. At the same time, it offers a balanced mix of comfort, price and flexibility, something that is not always easy to find in all-inclusive resorts.

Just a few minutes away, you will also find striking beaches such as Praia da Coelha, one of the most photogenic coastal landscapes in the Algarve.

All-Inclusive Resorts in Albufeira: Are They Worth It and Which Ones to Choose

The main advantage of an all-inclusive hotel is clear: meals, drinks and part of the activities are included, which greatly simplifies the logistics of a trip. For those looking to relax, travel as a family or avoid constant movement between places, this model works very well.

However, some all-inclusive hotels are located away from the most interesting beaches or the best coastal access points. This means that, in practice, the experience can end up being largely centred around the resort itself.

Among the most popular options in Albufeira, the following stand out:

Before booking, it is worth deciding one important thing: is the goal to stay inside the resort, or to use the hotel as a base to explore the region?

Monica Isabel Beach Club stands out mainly as a budget-friendly all-inclusive option, something relatively rare in an area like Albufeira. For those looking for a stay with meals included without significantly increasing the budget, it can be an interesting choice.

However, in terms of comfort, quality of facilities and overall experience, there are more complete options.

A clear example is Grande Real Santa Eulália Resort & Hotel Spa, which offers a more consistent experience, with better communal areas, direct beach access and a higher level of service.

If It Were My First Time in Albufeira, I Would Stay Here

For first-time visitors to Albufeira, the best strategy is usually to choose a hotel with a well-balanced location between the historic centre and the beach areas.

A good option is to stay close to the historic centre, which allows you to explore restaurants and viewpoints on foot. Those who prefer quieter hotels may consider areas near São Rafael or Galé, where the coastal scenery is particularly striking.

Meanwhile, travellers who want to enjoy the city’s nightlife tend to prefer the Oura area, where being close to The Strip Albufeira makes it easy to go out at night without relying on transport.

Regardless of the choice, Albufeira remains a practical base for exploring central Algarve.

From Albufeira Marina, several boat tours depart along the coast towards the famous Benagil Cave, one of the region’s most iconic natural formations.
