Where to eat in Liverpool: Traditional food in Liverpool pubs

Ma Egerton’s Stage Door

This historic pub is located just behind the Empire Theatre, in a building full of memories.

This is because over the decades, Ma Egerton’s has been frequented by well-known names in the arts, and it remains one of the best places to try typical food in an informal setting.

British classics such as fish & chips, steak pie and the famous Liverpool scouse are all on the menu.

The sofas invite you to stay longer, whether you’re having lunch, dinner or just a drink.

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms

The Philharmonic Dining Rooms is just off Hope Street, and some say it’s one of the most beautiful pubs in the UK.

It’s imposing façade and the Victorian-style interior impress on arrival. Also, the menu also includes traditional dishes such as bangers and mash, shepherd’s pie and Sunday roast.

There are also several vegetarian options and classic desserts such as sticky toffee pudding. A must for those who want to combine history with good food.

Ye Cracke

It’s impossible to talk about Liverpool without mentioning the Beatles, so you should know that the Ye Crake pub is one of the direct links to John Lennon, who frequented it during his student days.

The atmosphere is relaxed, with weathered wooden tables and an authentic feel.

The menu is simple but effective: hot sandwiches, beef stew, toad in the hole and other British specialties. A great place for a quick meal or a break with a craft beer.

The Monro

A little more sophisticated, but without losing the charm of a real British pub.

The Monro is a gastropub in a quiet area near Ropewalks. The atmosphere is family-friendly, with fireplaces burning in the cold months, and the menu combines classic dishes with a contemporary twist.

Also, the fish pie with mashed potatoes is one of the specialties, as are the grilled meat dishes.

Where to eat in Liverpool: Family restaurants

Smoke & Dough

Smoke & Dough is located in Liverpool ONE and, in addition to the normal menu, you have the option of choosing a combination of different grilled meats.

That’s what we did, which is to say that we chose the menu of different grilled meats and shared the four of us, along with the side dishes we ordered.

However, if you prefer, the dishes arrive at the table partially prepared and are finished by the customers themselves on a grill stone.

It’s a fun option, especially for groups or families with children.

The pizzas are cooked in a wood-fired oven, the pastas are varied, and it also has a special children’s menu.

It is also located in Liverpool ONE, which makes it convenient for a break during a day of shopping or visiting the museums in the area.

Where to eat in Liverpool: Quick Meals

BURGER & SAUCE – Liverpool

For those looking for a quick but tasty meal, this is an excellent choice.

Burger & Sauce‘s burgers are freshly prepared, with juicy meat and fluffy buns, yet the service is very fast.

The variety of sauces adds a special touch and the service is usually efficient.

It also works as a takeaway, which means it’s ideal for those who are short on time or prefer to eat outdoors.

Down the Hatch is a vegetarian and vegan restaurant that surprises even the most skeptical. Meals are quick and well served, with dishes such as veggie burgers, meatless chili and vegan mac ‘n cheese.

The quality is consistent and the flavors are intense, plus the atmosphere is alternative.

Where to eat in Liverpool: Markets and street food

Street Market at Royal Albert Dock

The Royal Albert Dock market has a privileged location on Liverpool’s waterfront, close to the Pier Head.

So, just a few steps from the city center, you can find different food trucks with cuisine from all over the world: Greek, Korean, Turkish, Spanish restaurants and even a dinner van with American food.

Baltic Market

Baltic Market is a street food market in Baltic Triangle, one of the city’s most creative areas.

It brings together various stalls with food from different parts of the world: artisan pizza, Mexican tacos, Asian food, hamburgers and much more.

There’s also live music, shared tables and a relaxed atmosphere that invites you to stay. In other words, it’s an excellent option for a group lunch or to try something new.

Afternoon Tea in Liverpool

Although it’s not as well known for its afternoon tea as London or Bath, Liverpool also has interesting proposals for those who can’t do without this British tradition.

Oh Me Oh My

Oh Me Oh My is a space overlooking the Liver Building and the River Mersey. The interior is elegant and the afternoon tea service includes English-style tea, i.e. scones with cream and jam, fine sandwiches and homemade cakes.

However, it is necessary to book in advance, especially at weekends.
