Do You Know How Tipping Works on Cruises? This can be a confusing topic since each cruise line has its own rules. And these rules change over time, so it’s important to stay updated!

So, what are the main tipping and gratuity rules during a cruise?

Until recently, tipping on a cruise was mandatory and had a fixed daily amount.

There were no doubts because the staff compensation was paid before the trip, when booking the cruise.

However, this is no longer the case on some ships. Therefore, continue reading to learn how to navigate these turbulent, and not always transparent waters, regarding staff compensation on ships.

To help you navigate, I have gathered in this article the information that usually applies in the sector. It is important to confirm which rules apply to the cruise you choose.

Until recently, tips on cruises were paid to the travel agency, with a fixed daily amount. In other words, they were mandatory.

The justification for charging tips along with the travel package was that there are many staff members who do not have contact with passengers. In theory, these staff members would not receive any gratuities.

Honestly, I have my doubts about this model, as I doubt the paid amount actually reaches the staff.

Paying tips in advance means that no staff member expects to receive a tip. This has the advantage of passengers not needing to carry cash on the ship.

Therefore, there were doubts about the effectiveness of this model, which led to changes in the sector.

Currently, passengers can choose to pay tips in advance, as was done previously, or, upon request, give tips directly to the staff.

In other words, passengers who request it can opt not to pay the staff compensation in advance to the travel agency, or they can choose to tip the staff during the cruise.

However, this option of not paying tips before the cruise is not available on all cruises.

This means you should inform yourself about the prevailing policy.
