- 4 days in Santo Antão
- 1 final night in São Vicente
That final night is not just a logistical detail. It gives you a comfortable buffer before your flight, avoids unnecessary stress if the ferry is delayed, and lets you finish the trip at a more relaxed pace.
Another important decision is where to stay. In São Vicente, the choice is straightforward: stay in Mindelo. In Santo Antão, there is more to consider. Paul Valley offers a full immersion in the island’s landscapes, while Ribeira Grande and Ponta do Sol are convenient bases for exploring the northern coast. Porto Novo is more practical than atmospheric.
The most common mistake is changing accommodation every day. On paper, it may seem efficient. In reality, it breaks up the experience and wastes valuable time packing, checking out, and moving between locations.

7-Day São Vicente and Santo Antão Itinerary: Day by Day
Day 1: Arrive in Mindelo and Get Your First Feel for the Island
Arrive in São Vicente and check in at Ouril Mindelo.
The first day is not about trying to see everything. It is about settling into the pace of the island. Walk through central Mindelo, stroll along the waterfront, and watch the city come alive towards the end of the day.
Mindelo reveals itself slowly. Trying to pack too much into the first few hours only takes away from the experience.
Staying in the city centre makes the logistics much easier and gives you more time to enjoy Mindelo at a relaxed pace.
Day 2: Explore São Vicente by Car (What Is Really Worth Seeing)
One day is enough to explore São Vicente by car, with strategic stops at Monte Verde, São Pedro, Salamansa, and Baía das Gatas. These are some of the island’s highlights, each offering a different perspective of its landscape and local life.
The important thing here is not ticking places off a checklist. It is understanding the island as a whole. São Vicente does not compete with other Cape Verdean islands when it comes to beaches. Some are pleasant, but they are not the main reason to visit.
The real value lies in the island’s character: small, accessible, and with a strong sense of identity. That is what makes the time spent exploring São Vicente worthwhile, rather than simply the number of places marked on the map.

Day 3: Ferry to Santo Antão + Settle into Paul Valley
Take the ferry from Mindelo to Porto Novo. The crossing takes around one hour, but the change of scenery is immediate. The arid landscapes of São Vicente give way to a greener, more rugged, and more demanding island.
From Porto Novo, take a transfer to Paul Valley and check in at Casa Cavoquinho.
This is one of the decisions that can make the itinerary significantly better. Staying in Paul means you can start your hikes without spending hours travelling to and from your accommodation.

Day 4: Paul Valley → Cova Crater → Paul (12 km Circular Hike)
The hike usually starts at Cova Crater, followed by a descent into the valley, covering around 6 km. We chose to do the full circular route instead, for a total of approximately 12 km.
It is a challenging hike, but also one of the most rewarding in Santo Antão. The route combines dramatic mountain scenery with a glimpse of everyday life, including the volcanic crater, agricultural areas, and traditional villages.
The ascent is long, so allow around 6–8 hours for the hike, depending on your pace and stops.

This day in Porto Novo challenges the image of Santo Antão as a purely green destination. The landscape here is drier and less immediately striking. It may not be the most photogenic part of the trip, but it adds valuable context and shows that the island is far from uniform.
It is a day that makes sense if you want a more complete picture of Santo Antão, rather than focusing only on its most famous and visually impressive places.
Day 6: Explore Santo Antão (The Essentials in One Day)
Dedicate the day to the north of the island, including Ribeira Grande, Ponta do Sol, and some of Santo Antão’s most scenic mountain roads, such as the Corda Road and the Love Road.
This is the kind of day that looks simple on a map but proves more demanding in reality. Distances may be short, but the mountainous terrain and road conditions can significantly increase travel times.

More than a luxury, this final night is a way to end the trip at a different pace. After several days of travelling and exploring, having comfort, convenience, and easy access to the airport makes a noticeable difference.
It is also a good opportunity to slow down, enjoy the last hours in Cape Verde, and avoid adding unnecessary stress before the journey home.
Day 8: Return Home
It is time to say goodbye to Cape Verde and catch your flight home.
If possible, keep the morning relaxed and allow plenty of time to reach the airport. After a week of exploring São Vicente and Santo Antão, there is no need to end the trip in a rush.

No itinerary works perfectly for everyone, and this one is no exception. There are three adjustments that can make sense depending on your travel style and priorities:
Less time: Reduce São Vicente to one full day and head to Santo Antão earlier.
Fewer changes: Choose a single base in Paul Valley and explore the island from there. This means less time spent packing, checking out, and moving between accommodations.
More hiking: Spend more days exploring the northern part of Santo Antão and add extra hiking trails to the itinerary.
