Everything You Need to Know About São Jorge Island Airport (SJZ)
Location and How to Get from São Jorge Island Airport to Velas Town Center
The airport is located in the parish of Ribeira Seca, in the municipality of Velas, approximately 7 km from the town center.
The best way to get around São Jorge Island is by renting a car, and the good news is that you can do it online and in advance.
Since the island is relatively small and has a limited number of rental cars, I recommend booking a car as soon as you decide to visit São Jorge.

Airlines and Destinations
Currently, SATA Air Açores is the only airline operating at the airport, providing the following connections:
- Ponta Delgada (PDL) – São Miguel
- Terceira (TER) – Terceira Island
From these airports, you can take connecting flights to Lisbon, Porto and other islands in the archipelago.

Facilities and Services
Although the airport is small, it offers the essential services for passengers:
- Passenger Terminal: Small but functional, with boarding and arrival areas.
- Check-in: SATA Air Açores service counters.
- Car Rental: Local companies offer rent-a-car services.
- Snack Bar/Cafeteria: Limited options for those looking for a quick meal.
- Parking: A small free parking lot near the terminal.

Traveler Tips
- Book Flights in Advance: With limited daily connections, seats can sell out quickly, especially during peak season.
- Be Aware of the Weather: Bad weather can impact flights, leading to delays or cancellations.
- Rent a Car: Public transportation is limited, so a rental car is the best way to explore the island.
- Check-in Early: To avoid any issues, arrive at the airport with enough time for boarding procedures.

Fun Facts About the São Jorge Island Airport
- The airport was inaugurated in 1983, significantly improving the island’s connection with the rest of the Azores.
