Everything you need to know about San Juan Airport, also known as Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport (SJU), the main airport in Puerto Rico.
It is located in Carolina, a city near the capital, San Juan. This is the busiest airport on the island, serving as the main entry point for tourists and residents traveling to and from Puerto Rico.
It has a large number of international and domestic flights, meaning SJU connects Puerto Rico with various cities in the United States, Latin America, and Europe.
Inside the airport, you can find duty-free shops where it is possible to buy products from international brands.
In addition, for meals, there are restaurants and cafes that serve everything from fast food to snacks.
There is also free Wi-Fi access throughout the airport, which is ideal for those who need to work or just want to pass the time.
Therefore, in this article, I share how our experience was traveling through San Juan Airport, as well as all the information I consider important for those traveling to Puerto Rico for the first time.

How to get from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport to downtown San Juan?
Getting from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport to downtown San Juan is quite simple, as there are several transportation options available.
One of the easiest and quickest ways is to take a taxi. At the airport, there is a taxi line right outside the arrival terminals. The trip to downtown San Juan usually takes between 15 to 20 minutes, depending on traffic, but expect to pay around 20 USD.
Another option to consider is Uber, which is what I did.
Using Uber from the airport to downtown San Juan is often more economical than traditional taxis.
Just keep in mind that Uber cannot stop anywhere, meaning you need to go to Pier 16, the designated pick-up area for these services at the airport.
Once there, you can request a car through the app and quickly head to the city center.
However, if you prefer more independence during your stay, renting a car might be the best choice.
At the airport, there are several car rental companies (more information to follow), and this option is ideal for those who want to explore not only San Juan but also other parts of Puerto Rico.

Car rental prices depend on the number of rental days and the features of the chosen vehicle. However, don’t make the mistake of staying only in the capital, San Juan, as the rest of the island is very beautiful.
Therefore, I recommend that one of the first things to do when traveling to Puerto Rico is to rent a car. I use and recommend Discovercars, which often offers the best conditions.
The roads are well-signposted and driving is smooth. Pay attention to speed limits, especially on highways, as speed cameras and policing are frequent.
