First and foremost, Quinta da Aveleda in Penafiel has been in the Guedes family for about 300 years. That’s a long time.

Moreover, the family started producing Vinho Verde wine in 1870, and the business has been managed by several generations.

Currently, they’re in the 5th generation when it comes to wine production and the 15th generation in terms of the Quinta da Aveleda estate.

What to see at Quinta da Aveleda.

The estate is open for visits by appointment (please see the contacts at the end of the article).

When I visited the estate, I mainly focused on three main areas: the gardens, the threshing floor (with the corn storehouse), and the old cellar.

These places on the estate were enough to spend an incredible afternoon, but you can also visit the vineyard if you wish.

The magical gardens of Quinta da Aveleda

There’s no doubt that the gardens are well worth a visit because they are truly beautiful!

The gardens at Quinta da Aveleda are divided into different sections, each with its own unique features.

So, the first part we visited was the most humid and had a tropical style with palm trees and other trees from this ecosystem.

However, as we wandered through the gardens, we discovered, little by little, lakes and other nooks, as well as very beautiful tree species!

Did you know, for example, that there is a eucalyptus tree in the estate that is over 200 years old?

It’s a majestic tree, and it takes several people to fully embrace it.

But you can also see other interesting trees such as the Japanese cedar, swamp cypresses, giant American sequoias, and even traditional camellias, which many call Japanese camellias.

We also visited this lovely little house, which was the former guard’s house.

At the end of the visit to the gardens, we did a tasting of Vinho Verde wines and cheeses, both produced by Quinta da Aveleda in Penafiel.

Indeed, Quinta da Aveleda is a very appealing destination for wine tourism enthusiasts, that is, those who appreciate wine culture, and in this region, the flagship product is Vinho Verde!

In fact, if you are interested in these and other products from Quinta da Aveleda, you can buy them at the shop that is part of this estate.

The eira and espigueiro (The threshing floor and the granary)

We continued our visit through the estate and arrived at the threshing floor (eira) and the granary (espigueiro).

As you can imagine, these areas are directly related to the agricultural activity of the estate. In other words, the threshing floor was used to dry the cereals, and the granary to store them during the autumn and winter.

On the day of our visit, the threshing floor welcomed us to a lively celebration, as we had the opportunity to taste three types of sangria produced by the estate: Casal Garcia Red Sangria, Casal Garcia White Sangria, and Casal Garcia Red Fruit Sangria.

The three types of sangria are quite refreshing, making them ideal drinks for hot days.

So, take a few bottles home!

The Old Cellar – an incredible sensory experience

Visiting the Old Cellar at Quinta da Aveleda.

The existence of the Old Cellar confirms that the family responsible for Quinta da Aveleda had strategic vision.

This is because who would have thought that, in 1850, someone would come up with the idea to build a cellar with a capacity for three hundred barrels, in a small town in the interior of Portugal?

That’s what happened in this region, and so that cellar not only exists but can also be visited at Quinta da Aveleda.

The Old Cellar is a dark and cold place, as these conditions are necessary for wine preservation.

So, when we entered the cellar, our eyes took some time to adjust to the darkness.

Then, we felt the cold that prevailed in that space throughout our bodies.

As we progressed through the cellar, we were amazed by the number of barrels stored there, but also by the characteristic smell of the aging wine.

As you can see, we really enjoyed the visit to the Old Cellar at Quinta da Aveleda because we felt like we were taking a trip back in time.
