Il Caravaggio International Airport (BGY), also known as Milan Bergamo Airport, Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport, or simply Bergamo Airport, is Italy’s third busiest international airport
It is the main gateway for visitors wanting to explore northern Italy, in particular the city of Milan.
I admit that I have passed through this airport many times, both on trips to Milan and as a stopover airport for other destinations.
This is because many low-cost airlines, notably Ryanair, Easyjet and Transavia use this airport.
So here’s the information I think is relevant for those traveling to Milan Bergamo Airport for the first time.

How do I get from Milan Bergamo Airport to Milan?
The cheapest way to get from Bergamo Airport to the center of Milan is by bus, and there are several companies that make this journey.
Flixbus has several buses throughout the day, and at the busiest times there are buses every half hour.
In this case, to find the lowest prices, I recommend that you buy your ticket online in advance, as this is the only way to get the cheapest prices.
But apart from Flixbus, there are other companies offering bus transportation to Milan. I traveled with Flibco, which was about to leave, and paid 12€ per adult.
This is the normal price, but if you buy a return ticket the price is lower. Plus, if you buy online, you get a discount. Regular tickets are bought at the door of the bus, which helps if you want to get to the city center quickly.
The bus ride to Milan took 50 minutes, although this time is subject to traffic at the time. In other words, it can be quicker or longer.
Terravision is another option for getting to the center, in fact, to get from Milan to Malpensa Airport I chose this company, just to see if there was a difference.
Autostradale and Orio Shuttle also run between Bergamo airport and Milan.
Honestly, I found the service of the two companies to be very similar.
It’s worth mentioning that the bus stop for Milan is on the right-hand side as you leave the airport.

How do I get from Milan Bergamo Airport to the center of Bergamo?
As I mentioned at the beginning of this article, I’ve been to Bergamo-Orio al Serio Airport several times, and I’ve stayed in Bergamo to get to know the city.
So if you want to explore Bergamo, know that there are buses from the airport to the center of Bergamo.
The city bus stop is on the left-hand side as you leave the airport and you should buy your tickets from the ticket machines.
Take line no. 1 to get to the center, and the journey takes about 15 minutes.
You can also buy your ticket from the machine inside the bus, using a debit or credit card, but it is not possible to buy directly from the driver.

Car rental at Milan Bergamo Airport
If you want to explore the Lombardy region in northern Italy, it’s a good idea to rent a car on arrival at the airport.
For car rental in Europe, I use and recommend Discovercars, which I think is the platform with the best conditions.
The most economical car rental companies in Milan are Autounion and Target Rent, but there are more well-known companies such as Alamo and Europcar.
Also, my recommendation is that when choosing a car, and if you have little time to spare, check whether the rental company’s offices are in the terminal, or whether you need to take a shuttle.
This shuttle is usually free, but if you’re in a hurry, I suggest you choose a company that picks up cars at the airport.
For example, this is the case with RentalPlus, Viaggiare, Italy Car Rent and OK Mobility.

Are there direct flights from the main European capitals to Milan Bergamo Airport?
Yes, Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY) offers direct flights from several major European capitals, making it a convenient gateway to Northern Italy.
Travelers can easily fly to Bergamo from cities like Frankfurt, Paris, Madrid, and Berlin, among others. These connections are typically operated by low-cost airlines, which makes the airport a popular choice for budget travelers and those planning city breaks or exploring the nearby regions.
Paris, for instance, is well connected with multiple daily flights, often departing from Paris Beauvais. Madrid and Berlin are similarly connected, with multiple weekly services.
While not all European capitals have direct flights to Bergamo, the airport is a hub for airlines like Ryanair, which ensures a wide network of destinations across Europe.
If your capital city doesn’t have a direct flight, connecting through a larger European hub like Barcelona is usually straightforward.

Everything you need to know before traveling to Milan Bergamo Airport
Is there Uber at Il Caravaggio International Airport?
Yes, it is possible to call an Uber at the airport, but I found that the prices were not similar to other European cities.
For example, a 10-minute Uber ride would cost 30€, which I think is too much. That’s why I think it’s worth taking a cab and not using Uber in Italy.
Are there hotels near Bergamo Airport?
Yes, there is accommodation near the airport, which is very convenient if you have an early morning flight and don’t want to spend the night at the airport.
So, if that’s the case for you, take a look at the map below with all the hotel and apartment options near the airport.
