Manchester Airport (MAN) is one of the busiest airports in the UK and is located about 9.1 miles from the city center, i.e. about 14 km from the city center.
It receives flights from all over the world and is an important connection point, not only for the north of England, but also for many international flights with stopovers.
It is the third largest airport in the UK, after Heathrow and Gatwick, and has three terminals serving dozens of airlines.
Despite its size, it’s relatively easy to navigate, especially if you already have some flying experience.
Over the years, I’ve used this airport both as a point of arrival in Manchester and for stopovers to other destinations.
So I’ve put together some useful tips and information that can help anyone planning a trip.
Be aware that if you have an early flight, there are good hotels nearby, but if you’re just passing through, it’s worth taking the opportunity to rest or take a quick stroll through the center of Manchester, which is right next door.

So don’t be surprised if you end up making a stopover here on your way to another country.

How do I get from Manchester Airport to the city center?
The quickest and most practical way is by train. This is because the airport has an integrated train station called Manchester Airport Station, with direct connections to Manchester Piccadilly Station (in the city center).
The journey takes around 20 minutes and costs around 5 pounds.
You can also go by bus or taxi/Uber, but the train is usually the best option in terms of time and price.
To catch the train (Transpennine Express), just follow the signs to “The Station” inside the airport. Tickets can be bought at the ticket office or online.

Is there Uber at Manchester Airport?
Yes, Uber is available, as are other transportation apps.
The pick-up zone is in a specific parking lot (designated on the map as T1/T3 Pick-up Zone). Don’t forget to confirm the arrival terminal and follow the signs to the meeting point with the driver.
The price to the city center varies, but count on 15 to 25 pounds, depending on the time and traffic.
Are there direct flights to Manchester from various cities in Europe and the United States?
Yes, Manchester Airport (MAN) is very well connected and receives direct flights from several European and American cities.
Thus, in Europe, there are frequent connections from:
- Madrid (MAD) and Barcelona (BCN) – with Iberia and Vueling
- Paris (CDG/ORY) – with Air France and easyJet
- Amsterdam (AMS) – with KLM
- Frankfurt (FRA) – with Lufthansa
- Rome (FCO) – with Ryanair and ITA Airways
- Dublin (DUB) – with Ryanair and Aer Lingus
- Zurich (ZRH) – with SWISS
- Lisbon (LIS) – with TAP, Ryanair and easyJet
- Porto (OPO) – with Ryanair and easyJet

As for transatlantic connections, you can fly to Manchester directly from:
- New York (JFK and Newark) – with United and Virgin Atlantic
- Atlanta (ATL) – with Delta
- Orlando (MCO) – with Virgin Atlantic
- Boston (BOS) and Chicago (ORD) – with seasonal services
- Toronto (YYZ) – with Air Transat and Air Canada
These routes make Manchester an accessible city both for a European getaway and for those coming from afar.

How many terminals does Manchester Airport have?
Manchester Airport has three terminals:
- Terminal 1: International and European flights (e.g. easyJet, Emirates)
- Terminal 2: Recently renovated; used by TUI, Qatar, Air France, etc.
- Terminal 3: Smaller, used by airlines such as Ryanair and British Airways
Always check which terminal your flight is in, especially on the return journey, as it can change depending on the airline.

Is it possible to spend the night at Manchester Airport?
Yes, but it’s not the most comfortable in the world. If you have an early flight and want to avoid stress, know that you can sleep inside the airport, especially in Terminal 1.
The lights are dimmer at night and there is security circulating, so be prepared to show your boarding pass if necessary.
There aren’t many stores open at dawn, but toilets are available.
If you prefer more comfort, you could consider booking a hotel right next to the airport.
Hotels near Manchester Airport
There are several accommodation options within walking distance (some even connected by covered walkways to the terminal):
- Radisson Blu Manchester Airport (4 stars)
- Clayton Hotel Manchester Airport (4 stars)
- Holiday Inn Express Manchester Airport (3 stars)
- ibis budget Manchester Airport T2 (2 stars)
These are ideal if you have a very early flight or arrive very late. And there are free shuttles in most cases.

Is it worth hiring a car at Manchester Airport?
If you’re going to explore other parts of the UK, such as the Lake District, Yorkshire or even Liverpool, then yes, renting a car might be a good idea. The roads are good and there are plenty of signs.
But if you’re only visiting Manchester, then a car can be a hindrance because of traffic and parking. The city has good public transport and it’s easy to get around on foot.
For car rental I use and recommend Discovercars, which is where I usually find good options, especially if I book in advance.

Extra tip for those traveling with children
Manchester Airport has play areas in all the terminals and several dining options with children’s menus. There are also well-located baby changing facilities.
What’s more, if you’re traveling as a family, it may help to know that the staff are usually friendly and available to help.
Shopping and restaurants at the airport
Before boarding, you’ll find several well-known stores, such as WHSmith, Dixons, Boots and World Duty Free. In terms of food, there’s a bit of everything:
- Pret a Manger, Costa Coffee and Greggs for quick snacks
- The Grain Loft and Bridgewater Exchange for more complete meals
- Vegetarian and vegan options available in various spaces
In addition, in Terminal 2, the shopping area has recently been renovated and is more modern and spacious.
