What to do if your luggage is lost on TAP? Here’s everything you need to know!

Someday it had to happen, and after more than 20 years traveling to different countries around the world, for the first time I arrived at my destination and didn’t have my suitcase.

It happened with TAP Portugal, but I believe it could have happened with any other airline. After all, any trip is subject to problems such as lost luggage.

In fact, I think the strange thing is that I’ve never had anything like this happen to me on so many trips.

So in this article I’ll tell you about my experience claiming a lost bag and how it was resolved.

I’ve also included some tips to protect yourself in similar situations, which are applicable to any airline. Losing luggage is always a delicate situation.

What do you do when your luggage is lost?

When it dawned on me that all the luggage had come off the carpet at the airport, and I didn’t see my suitcase, I quickly realized that I had to go through the baggage claim process.

So, how do you claim a lost bag? The first thing to do is notify the airline that the luggage hasn’t arrived.

This should be done right at the airport and you should look for the “Baggage Claim” or “Lost Luggage” counter.

They will ask you to fill in a form with your details and describe the bag. As a rule, they will ask if the lost luggage has identification, if it is a rigid or fabric suitcase, the color and the code to open the suitcase.

This is because all lost suitcases destined for Portugal must be inspected by Customs.

They are then asked to wait for a telephone call about the lost luggage.

This was the process with TAP Air Portugal, and I imagine it’s similar with other airlines, but I knew I could do more than just wait for a phone call.

Travel insurance: is it worth including luggage protection?

I always travel with travel insurance because I prefer not to take any risks, and for me IATI Travel Insurance is the one with the best conditions.

The insurance I usually take out includes delays in the delivery of checked baggage and the search, location and dispatch of lost baggage!

So, without having to pay extra, I called IATI Travel Insurance and told them that my luggage was lost.

The next morning they delivered my suitcase to my house. Everything was fine. They even phoned me to confirm that I’d received my luggage. Losing my luggage was complicated, but everything was resolved quickly.

My experience with TAP customer service

The service provided by TAP Portugal was excellent. They explained the steps for submitting a claim for lost luggage and were always attentive.

When I asked if they knew where my suitcase was, they said they couldn’t find out at that moment, but that was an automatic response.

In other words, they didn’t make a phone call or look up any information on their computer.

I imagine this is standard procedure and they just fill in the forms about the lost luggage and that’s it. Then someone follows it up.
