Are you looking for travel tips about La Parguera Nature Reserve? You are in the right place, as I had the opportunity to explore this paradise for nature lovers and adventurers like me. It’s located on the southwest coast of Puerto Rico, it’s an amazing place, and if you’re intrigued, I recommend reading this text until the end!
I really loves this natural park, filled with mangroves, wildlife, and small islands known as La Parguera Cays. People visit this place for its bioluminescent waters and biodiversity.
The marine and terrestrial biodiversity includes, for example, fish, birds, iguanas, and also corals.
The presence of these and other animals makes this region ideal for activities such as snorkeling, boat tours, and, of course, the relaxing Chiliboats Tour, which is what I did.
Therefore, in this article, I’ll explain what I believe is the best way to explore La Parguera, as well as the advantages of choosing a chilliboat, or water bike, tour for an equally eco-friendly and fun experience! Keep reading!

La Parguera Nature Reserve
La Parguera Nature Reserve is a protected park, known for its mangroves and La Parguera Cays, or small islets.
During a visit to this natural area, it’s common to spot birds such as pelicans and herons flying over the waters. Additionally, the reserve protects coral reefs, where different kind tropical fish live.
One of the highlights of La Parguera is the diversity of wildlife, like iguanas, manatees, sea turtles, and colorful fish.
So, exploring this natural park feels almost like diving into a tropical paradise. It’s impossible to remain indifferent to the turquoise waters in the cays, as well as the mangroves scattered throughout the area.
I believe experiencing La Parguera is something everyone should do, as this is one of the most incredible places in Puerto Rico.

Marine Life and Unique Ecosystem
The marine life in La Parguera is impressive, and just a half-day tour is enough to spot a considerable variety of species. In other words, it’s the perfect setting for nature lovers!
You can expect to see tropical fish, sea turtles, and starfish, as these species are quite common in the area.
Additionally, you’ll also spot birds soaring in the sky and landing in the mangroves. Pelicans and herons are just some of the species you can regularly observe.

Additionally, many visitors take the opportunity to go snorkeling, drawn by the chance to easily observe marine life up close.
However, I recommend always keeping in mind that you are in a protected area, and snorkeling should be done with respect for the environment. So, avoid touching the animals and corals while snorkeling.
In other words, it’s important to balance enjoying the beauty of the place while ensuring its preservation.

Bioluminescent Bay: Watching the Bay’s Water Glow
Have you ever heard of the phenomenon of bioluminescence? Explained very simply, it’s when micro-organisms in the water glow when agitated.
In fact, there are few such places in the world, and the bioluminescent bay of La Parguera is one of those special places.
At night, the waters glow magically, thanks to micro-organisms that emit light when disturbed. This “glowing” effect when you touch the water is difficult to describe, so you really have to try it to see what it’s all about.
So, to have the experience of seeing the water glow in Puerto Rico, one of the easiest ways to do it is by taking a night boat trip.
This way, you can see the phenomenon of bioluminescence in action.
And if you want to, you can perfectly combine the two activities, i.e. tour La Parguera during the day and return when night falls to watch the water glow.

Chiliboats Tour: Exploring La Parguera Nature Reserve by Water Bike
I admit my ignorance, having never heard of water bikes before….
So, the chiliboats tour run by Caribbean Chiliboats Tourss uses water bikes, or chiliboats, which allow you to pedal almost effortlessly over the water.
And you didn’t expect to enjoy it so much!!!! It’s all very peaceful, not physically demanding, and the guides are excellent, pointing out unique opportunities to see the local fauna and ensuring the safety of the participants.
What’s more, the sensation of gliding through the waters while pedaling is simply unforgettable!
We can explore the mangroves up close, which are fundamental ecosystems for local biodiversity.

But during the tour, you can also spot exotic birds and small crustaceans that live in these environments.
Another highlight of La Parguera are the natural pools, where visitors can swim and see the marine life at the bottom of the sea. Our guide brought snacks and drinks, which was great for replenishing energy.
The tour is ecological and sustainable, as the water bikes are pedal-powered, without engines, which avoids polluting emissions. This tour also respects protected areas and promotes responsible tourism, after all, we are in a protected area.
To make the most of the tour, we recommend that you bring sunscreen, comfortable clothes and a waterproof camera, or be very careful with cell phones or cameras.

*I visited La Parguera on a Fam Trip organized by Discover Puerto Rico as part of TBEX North America. I was supported by the fantastic Anamalys Meléndez Rolón, who accompanied the group.
