Are you looking for information about tours to Icacos Beach? If so, you’ve come to the right place, as I’ve gathered all the details you need in this travel guide.

Icacos Beach is located off the coast of Fajardo, Puerto Rico, specifically on Cayo Icacos, or Icacos Island.

It’s a small, uninhabited island, perfect for those seeking tranquility and a connection with nature. With white sands and crystal-clear waters, it’s easy to see why visitors call it a tropical paradise.

Additionally, since it’s only accessible by boat, Icacos offers a more intimate experience, away from the crowds and hustle of Puerto Rico’s beaches.

And although it may seem like there’s not much to do on this small paradise, in my opinion, that’s exactly its charm.

In other words, Icacos Beach is ideal for relaxing in the sun or water, snorkeling among coral reefs, and exploring marine life. I also really enjoyed walking along the beach and simply sitting to watch the sea.

I went on the Catamaran Sail & Snorkel Tour with Castillo Tours and loved every minute.

So, in this article, besides telling you how the tour to Cayo Icacos was, I also include all the information you need to organize your own trip to Icacos.

For example, I show you in detail the ways to reach Icacos, what to do there, and essential tips to make the most of this Caribbean paradise.

Lastly, before we dive into the details, I recommend taking a close look at the photos to see why it’s called a paradise.

What to expect from a boat tour to Icacos Island?

Taking the boat tour to Icacos Island was an amazing experience that I highly recommend to anyone visiting Puerto Rico!

We departed from Villa Marina, in Fajardo, aboard the Barefoot IV, a 47-foot catamaran. Right from the start, the atmosphere was lively, with plenty of music, especially salsa and reggaeton, along with an open bar offering both alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks.

The energy on board was contagious, with everyone having fun as we sailed through the blue sea.

When we arrived at Icacos Island, we jumped off the boat onto the white sand and had free time to explore.

I took the opportunity to walk around the island, while others chose to lie on the beach and soak up the sun. Lunch was served on board, with options like salads, bread, cheese, and charcuterie—a light and tasty meal, perfect for recharging.

One of the highlights, in my opinion, was the snorkeling. While some chose to snorkel near the shore of Icacos, we decided to venture out into deeper waters.

That’s where I was lucky enough to spot a sea turtle swimming calmly beside me. I couldn’t believe it was really happening!

Besides that, there were corals on the seabed and fish of all shapes, sizes, and colors swimming nearby… it was a magical moment.

After a few hours on the island and in the water, we sailed back to Fajardo, still enjoying the music and good vibes on board.

Everything you need to know before taking a tour to Icacos Island

How to Get to Icacos Beach

To reach this island, you need to catch a boat from Fajardo, where several local companies offer boat tours and private charters. The trips are easy to arrange and take around 15 to 20 minutes.

If you prefer something more personalized, it’s possible to rent a private boat, giving you more flexibility with schedules and places to explore. Some companies, like “Castillo Tours,” offer all-inclusive packages, covering transportation, drinks, and snacks on board.

The advantage of a private tour is that you can avoid peak hours, ensuring a more peaceful experience.

In any case, the most important thing is to plan ahead, especially during the high season. So, book directly with Castillo Tours or check out other tour options to Icacos Island.

What are the main activities at Icacos Beach?

As I mentioned before, what I loved most about Icacos Beach was its tranquility. So, it’s not the place for adrenaline junkies.

Still, there are some water sports activities, like snorkeling, thanks to the coral reefs surrounding the island and the crystal-clear waters.

And as with any Caribbean beach, soaking in the water and sunbathing on the sand are the two most common activities.

But if you prefer something more active without giving up on peace, like I do, walking along the island is a great option, as the sand is soft and the waves are almost nonexistent.

What is the best time to visit Icacos Beach?

The best time to visit Puerto Rico in general, and Icacos Beach in particular, is between December and April when the weather is drier and milder. During these months, you can expect pleasant temperatures and less chance of rain.

However, it’s possible to visit Icacos year-round, although summer months tend to be hotter and more humid.

I visited the island in July, and despite some photos showing cloudy skies, I had a great experience.

My recommendation is to be particularly cautious if traveling between June and November, as it is hurricane season, and it’s important to check the weather forecast.

Also, in terms of crowds, weekends and local holidays are the busiest times, so I suggest avoiding these periods.

What are the tourist attractions near Icacos Beach?

In addition to Icacos Beach, there are other nearby attractions worth exploring. One of them is the Las Cabezas de San Juan Natural Reserve, also located in Fajardo.

This reserve is highly sought after for its hiking trails, so if you enjoy trails, it could be an excellent choice.

Additionally, in Fajardo, another must-see is the Bioluminescent Bay, one of the few in the world where you can see microorganisms that glow in the dark.

Many visitors opt to combine a visit to Icacos with an evening tour of the bioluminescent bay, creating a full day of adventures.

What to Bring to Icacos Beach

When visiting Icacos Beach, it’s important to be prepared. The island is uninhabited, so there are no facilities like restaurants or shops. Make sure to bring everything you need for a comfortable day. Essential items include sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, water, and snacks.

If you plan to go snorkeling, bring your own gear or rent it through the tour. Bringing a towel and an extra set of clothes is also a good idea, especially if you’ll be engaging in water activities.

Another important tip is to bring trash bags, as the island is preserved, and it’s crucial to leave everything clean and free of litter.

Tips for Making the Most of Your Visit to Icacos Beach

To make the most of your day at Icacos Beach, here are some tips that can make a big difference:

Arrive early: This allows you to enjoy the early hours of the morning on the nearly deserted beach. During summer, the heat can be intense, so the cooler morning temperatures can be more comfortable. Additionally, arriving early helps avoid the heavier boat traffic that builds up by mid-morning.

Bring quality snorkeling gear: Although some tour companies offer equipment rentals, having your own gear can enhance the experience. The crystal-clear waters of Icacos are perfect for observing marine life in all its splendor.

Bring a sunshade or shelter: The island lacks natural shade, and spending long hours in the sun without protection can be uncomfortable.

Following these tips will ensure a comfortable and enjoyable day at the beach.

From Fajardo, boats depart regularly to the island. The trips are quick, usually taking 10 to 15 minutes, depending on sea conditions.

Although the island has a rudimentary dock, boats usually can only anchor close to the beach, allowing you to jump directly into the water and then walk to the sand.
