This system facilitates entry into the country by guaranteeing a prior security check for those arriving at US airports.
As a Portuguese passport holder, I need to renew my ESTA every time I have trips scheduled to the United States of America, so in this article, I’m going to explain everything you need to know about ESTA, including what the rules are and how to apply for it.
So, in this article, you’ll find information on who needs ESTA, the list of eligible countries, how the validity works, and even how to deal with a possible rejection of the application.

What is ESTA?
ESTA (Electronic System for Travel Authorization) is an electronic system used to determine whether a traveler is eligible to enter the United States without needing a traditional visa.
As I mentioned before, this system is for citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program.
ESTA allows travelers to enter the US for tourism or business for a maximum period of 90 days.
However, having ESTA approved does not automatically guarantee entry into the country, as the final decision rests with the immigration authorities.
ESTA is a practical solution for those who want to visit the USA without the more complex and time-consuming process of obtaining a visa.
Which countries are eligible?
The list of countries eligible for ESTA includes those that are part of the Visa Waiver Program.
In other words, countries such as Portugal, the United Kingdom, Japan and Australia, among others, are currently included.
Citizens of these countries can apply for ESTA instead of a traditional visa to enter the USA.
The US government updates the list of eligible countries regularly, so it is important to check whether your nationality is on this list.
To qualify, the traveler must be a citizen of one of the countries in the program and have a valid passport.
If you are not a citizen of an eligible country, you will need to apply for a visa to enter the USA.
How do I apply for ESTA?
The process of applying for ESTA is simple and can be done online, directly on the official US government website.
To apply, you need your passport, details of your travel plans and a credit or debit card to pay the fee, which is around 21 dollars.
When filling in the form, they ask for personal information, such as your passport number, contact details, social networks and information about the purpose of the trip.
After submitting the form, the response is usually quick, but it is advisable to apply at least 72 hours before your trip.
How long is ESTA valid for?
ESTA is valid for two years from the date of approval or until the traveler’s passport expires, whichever comes first.
During this period, it is possible to make multiple trips to the United States, as long as each stay does not exceed 90 consecutive days.
Although ESTA is valid for multiple entries into the country, it does not allow you to stay beyond the established time limit.
If you want to extend your stay, you will need to obtain a visa. When your ESTA expires, you must renew it with a new application, using the same online process.
What is the difference between an ESTA and a visa?
Many people confuse the ESTA with a visa, but they are actually different documents.
ESTA is an authorization for travelers from countries that are part of the Visa Waiver Program, allowing them to enter the USA without the need for a formal visa.
However, the ESTA only applies to short-term trips of up to 90 days, for tourism, business or transit.
In other words, if the purpose of your trip is to study, work or stay for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a traditional visa.
Bear in mind that the visa process is longer and requires a face-to-face interview at a US embassy or consulate.
What should I do if my ESTA is rejected?
If your ESTA application is rejected, there’s no need to panic. This is because an ESTA rejection does not mean that you cannot travel to the United States.
In this case, you will need to apply for a visa through the American embassy or consulate.
Common reasons for rejection include errors in filling in the form, a criminal record or failure to meet the eligibility requirements.
When applying for a visa, you will need to go through a more detailed process, which includes an interview and submission of documents.
This process can take longer, so it’s important to plan your trip in advance.
How do I renew my ESTA?
If your ESTA has expired or your passport has been renewed, you will need to make a new application to travel to the United States again.
The renewal process is the same as for an initial application, i.e. you must fill in the online form with all the updated information.
ESTA cannot be extended, so every time the two-year validity expires, you must obtain a new authorization.
Bear in mind that ESTA also expires if the passport associated with the application is replaced or if there are significant changes to the information provided, such as name or citizenship.
Using ESTA for Transit
Even if your final destination is not the United States, if you make a stopover in the country, you will need an ESTA to transit through American territory.
ESTA for transit works in the same way as for tourism or business, i.e. you need to apply for authorization before you travel.
During transit, you will need to pass through immigration controls, which is why having an approved ESTA is essential.
Many travelers don’t realize this is necessary, but it’s important to remember that, regardless of the length of the stopover, entry into the USA requires authorization.
Security Rules and Entry Requirements
Having ESTA approved does not guarantee automatic entry into the United States. Upon arrival, the traveler will go through security and immigration controls, where the authorities may ask questions about the purpose of the visit.
It is important to maintain a cooperative attitude and have all the necessary documents at hand, such as a passport, return ticket and proof of accommodation.
The final decision on entering the country always rests with the border authority.
It is therefore important to follow all security rules and be prepared to provide additional information if necessary.
Can I make changes or updates to my ESTA?
Once your ESTA has been approved, you can still update some information, such as your accommodation details during your stay in the United States.
However, information such as passport number and name cannot be changed.
If there are significant changes to this information, you will need to apply for a new ESTA.
It is therefore essential to ensure that all the data submitted on the form is correct before sending it in.
In addition, if you are making a new trip with a different stay plan, you can update the hotel address or contact directly in the system.
