Christmas Markets in Europe to visit this year

Andorra Christmas Market

Center of Andorra la Vella at Christmas.
Center of Andorra la Vella at Christmas.

The Christmas Market in Andorra la Vella is truly enchanting!

What I loved most was the decoration, especially the starry sky created by thousands of yellow lights suspended over the stalls.

Additionally, the atmosphere is perfect for finding unique Christmas gifts, with a selection of items I don’t usually see in stores in Portugal.

The food and drinks are comforting, and the prices are surprisingly affordable.

Andorra in December is an incredible destination for those who love snow or simply want to relax.

So, I recommend a visit to the Caldea Thermal Spa, where you can relax in hot springs, even when it’s snowing outside, and for the more adventurous, a sled ride in Grandvalira is an experience not to be missed.

And if you’re looking for something more thrilling, try a snowmobile ride through the Pyrenees mountains.

Oh, and of course, shopping! With much lower taxes than other european countries, Andorra is the ideal place to buy Christmas presents at competitive prices, especially perfumes and photographic equipment.

Barcelona Christmas Market

The best Christmas markets in Barcelona.
The best Christmas markets in Barcelona.

If you enjoy exploring Christmas markets, Barcelona is the perfect destination, as it’s just a low-cost flight away from Portugal.

The most iconic market is the Fira de Santa Llúcia, held since 1786 in front of Barcelona’s Cathedral, with around 300 stalls selling decorations and the traditional caganers.

Additionally, another market worth visiting is the Fira de la Sagrada Família, which has a mix of stalls with sweets, roasted chestnuts, and Christmas trees.

But if you prefer something bigger, visit Nadal al Port at Barcelona’s port. It features a 31-meter Christmas tree and a floating nativity scene, while for fans of Catalan crafts, the Fira de Reis on Gran Via is the right choice.

Aside from the markets, the Christmas lights decorating over 4 km of streets, such as Passeig de Gràcia and Plaça de Catalunya, are worth your attention, as are the nativity scenes at the Cathedral and Plaça de Sant Jaume.

Bordeaux Christmas Market

Bordeaux Christmas Market, France.
Bordeaux Christmas Market, France.

The Bordeaux Christmas Market is one of the city’s main attractions during the festive season, as it fills the Tourny Promenade with over 100 stalls of handicrafts, clothing, perfumes, and, of course, plenty of food.

Upon entry, there is security control, with backpacks checked and metal detectors, but it’s a necessary measure nowadays.

Strolling through the market is a charming experience, with the aromas of sweets, jams, and chocolate fountains making the visit even more irresistible.

The food and drink stalls are the most popular, with queues that, though busy, move quickly.

Additionally, it’s worth stopping for a wine tasting at Le Bar À Vin, next to the market, with prices ranging from €2 to €3.50 per glass.

If you’re looking for a more complete experience, I recommend the boat tour along the Garonne River, where you can enjoy local wines while admiring the city’s landscapes.

Bratislava Christmas Market

Bratislava Christmas Market.
Bratislava Christmas Market.

The Christmas Markets in Bratislava have the typical charm of European markets and therefore attract tourists from all over the world.

In the Main Square, the Vianočný hlavný trh is the main market and a true spectacle. I recommend taking some time to explore the craft and sweet stalls, such as the traditional gingerbread cookies.

A bit further away, next to the majestic Bratislava Castle, you’ll find the Vianočné trhy Advent na hrade, a smaller but equally beautiful market!

Here, the magic of Christmas is enhanced by the presence of the castle, while activities for children and a nativity scene delight visitors of all ages.

In terms of gastronomy, try lokša, a savory pancake that can be accompanied by various ingredients, or mead, a warm alcoholic drink with honey, and mulled wine to warm up and enjoy the spices of the season.

Bratislava promises an unforgettable Christmas experience, so if you haven’t considered visiting yet, add it to your list of must-see European Christmas markets!

Carcassonne Christmas Market, France.

The Christmas Market in Carcassonne is one of the most charming in southern France, located in the famous medieval city with its fortified walls.

During Christmas, the city of Carcassonne transforms into a fairy tale with festive decorations and lights in its historic streets.

The market, set up in Place Carnot, features stalls with local crafts and delicious treats like roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

Families can have a great time at the ice rink or on attractions like the Ferris wheel.

Additionally, the traditional carousel adds a nostalgic touch to the Christmas experience. The craft stalls are perfect for finding unique and authentic gifts, while the medieval atmosphere of the city creates an even more magical experience.

The Carcassonne Market is ideal for those looking to combine a cultural visit to one of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities with the Christmas spirit.

The Christmas Markets in Cologne are truly special, meaning they are among my favorites in Europe, perhaps because they were the first markets I visited. Since then, I have returned to Cologne, and they continue to be some of my favorites.

The city is filled with markets, such as the Weihnachtsmarkt am Kölner Dom (Cathedral Market), which stands out for its central location and dazzling decorations, with stalls offering food and crafts.

For me, it’s the perfect place to try Glühwein and enjoy reibekuchen and sausages.

Additionally, another must-visit market is Kölner Altstadt “Heimat der Henzel” – The Enchantment of the Gnomes, where you can admire wooden sculptures and enjoy the ice rink.

The Christmas Markets in Copenhagen are a magical celebration that lights up the city during the holiday season.

While the dates for some markets are still unconfirmed, Christmas in Tivoli at the iconic Tivoli Gardens is set from November 15, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

Additionally, another highlight is the Nyhavn Christmas Market, located at the famous Copenhagen harbor, where the colorful houses and Christmas lights create an idyllic setting.

Højbro Plads is known for its alpine market atmosphere and Santa Claus, while Kongens Nytorv stands out with its 3D lighting displays and Santa Claus encounters.

If you have the chance, I recommend visiting the Hans Christian Andersen Market for live music, and Axeltorv, famous for its gastronomy, as well as Freetown Christiania, an alternative market in Copenhagen.

It’s definitely worth exploring the Christmas Markets in Düsseldorf, as the city comes alive with eight markets spread along the banks of the Rhine River.

The Altstadt-Markt in the old town is ideal for finding special Christmas gifts and traditional stalls. The Handwerker-Markt stands out with wooden toy stalls and German sausages, while the Schadow-Markt delights with decorations and Glühwein stalls.

But there’s more to enjoy: the Kö-Bogen-Markt is the place to buy heart-shaped, Christmas tree, or star-shaped gingerbread cookies, at the Sternchen-Markt you’ll find original Christmas lights and traditional foods, and at the Engelchen-Markt, decorated with angels, you’ll discover traditional sweets and woolen gifts.

Malmö Christmas Market

The Malmö Christmas Market is one of Sweden’s most beautiful winter events, offering a truly Scandinavian atmosphere.

Its wooden alpine-style stalls, mainly located in Gustav Adolfs Torg Square and Lilla Torg, create a magical Christmas setting.

Food is one of the market’s highlights, so don’t miss out on gingerbread or the traditional Lucia bread (also known as Lussekatter), a sweet saffron and raisin bread served in honor of Saint Lucia.

The market’s authenticity is one of its greatest attractions. Unlike other Christmas markets, such as those in Copenhagen, there are no Santa Claus figures for photo sessions.

Instead, the focus is on local and handcrafted products, like handmade Christmas decorations, wreaths, and festive figurines. Interestingly, the vendors rotate weekly, ensuring a constantly refreshed selection.

Christmas Markets in Toulouse (South of France).

If you’re thinking of visiting the Christmas markets in Toulouse this year, I’m sure you’ll love it!

The most famous is the Christmas Village in Place du Capitole, where over 100 white wooden stalls create a snowy-like scene.

The aromas of mulled wine, chocolate, and the famous Aligot Aveyronnais (mashed potatoes with cheese) are irresistible, so don’t leave without trying it.

Prices range from €6 to €12, depending on the portion size, but it’s a regional Christmas classic.

The Christmas Market in Place Charles de Gaulle, near Place du Capitole, is perfect for families, with a Christmas tree-shaped carousel and several decorative statues.

Although the market at Place St-Pierre is smaller, its proximity to the banks of the River Garonne makes it worth exploring, with the Saint-Pierre Bridge as a scenic backdrop.

Are you thinking of visiting the Christmas Markets in Vienna? The Austrian capital is famous for this tradition that dates back to 1298, with various markets across the city, each with its own charm.

The Belvedere Christmas Market, in the gardens of Belvedere Palace, is perfect for those seeking a magical experience with a view of the historic palace.

Another highlight is the Rathausplatz Christmas Market (Viennese Dream Christmas Market), located in front of the City Hall.

This is the largest of them all, offering a wide selection of crafts and food stalls. Additionally, the market features an ice rink and a Ferris wheel.

For a more central experience, the Christmas Market at Stephansplatz, next to St. Stephen’s Cathedral, offers a stunning setting with the illuminated cathedral. However, don’t expect as many options as other markets, as this one tends to be quieter.

Lastly, if you’re looking for something more alternative, I recommend the Karlplatz Christmas Market (Art Advent), which focuses on arts and organic products.

Paris and London are popular destinations to see Christmas lights, not only because the streets are illuminated.

Neighborhood shops and large department stores also make a point of dedicating a lot of time (and money) to decorating their stores and window displays.

Which Christmas Markets I Plan to Visit in 2025

For the Christmas season of 2025, I have big plans! I recognize that these are ambitious projects, and I’m not sure if I’ll be able to complete them.

This is because I usually travel with my family during Christmas, and my children are in school, which makes it a bit challenging to schedule trips.

Nonetheless, this year we wanted to visit some of the markets in Alsace, such as Strasbourg, Colmar, Riquewihr, Kaysersberg, and, who knows, perhaps even go down to Mulhouse.
