Here’s everything you need to know about the Christmas and New Year’s Eve festivities in Madeira Island, which will take place all over the island from December 1, 2025 to January 5, 2026.
The people of Madeira call December the ‘party month’ because, at this time of year, many activities take place all over the island.
You can count on Christmas markets and Christmas lights illuminating the streets of Funchal and beyond.
There are also the traditional lapinhas, or nativity scenes, as well as meat sandwiches, bolo do caco, malassadas, poncha and various liqueurs.
And to round off this great month of festivities, you have to enjoy the fireworks and Christmas lights in Madeira, in an explosion of color and brightness that turns night into day.
Are you ready for some thrills? That’s what Christmas and New Year’s Eve in Madeira are all about!

What to do on Madeira Island at Christmas?
Visit the Christmas Markets in Funchal, Madeira
The main Christmas market in Madeira takes place in the central square of Avenida Arriaga in Funchal. There are lots of stalls selling mainly food and drink.
The dish of the day there is bolo do caco and a thousand and one flavors of poncha.
There’s also a stage that hosts shows and a mural especially dedicated to those who never miss an opportunity to take selfies.

Seeing the Christmas Lights on the Streets of Funchal
I wasn’t expecting to see so many illuminated streets in Funchal. In fact, it’s hard to say which are the most beautiful.
Therefore, I think the best strategy is to simply walk through the streets of Funchal and let yourself be surprised by the elaborate Christmas decorations.
However, if you need some references, I think the following areas are really unmissable:
- Praça do Povo;
- Funchal Quay;
- Colombo Square;
- Largo do Chafariz;
- Largo do Phelps and
- Fernão Ornelas Street.

Learn about the tradition of the Lapinha and Escadinha (Christmas cribs)
In Madeira we call the Christmas cribs Lapinha and Escadinha, and there are several of them scattered around the island. But what’s the difference between them?
Lapinha is a contemporary interpretation of the Birth of Christ, with creative elements that reflect a more modern approach, but without losing respect for the religious message.
The Escadinha, on the other hand, follows an ancient and striking tradition.
In other words, it’s a nativity scene arranged in steps, with the Child Jesus at the top, surrounded by Christmas figures and fruit, as a sign of abundance and gratitude.
Because they are unique, I think it’s worth including them on your list of things to do and see in Madeira at Christmas.

Admire the Ethnographic Village
In Largo da Restauração, right next to the Christmas Market, is the impressive Ethnographic Village!
Take a look at the stalls and see the ladies preparing soups in steaming pots, as well as the bolo do caco cooking on the hot griddle.
So don’t forget to stop by the little window where you can buy bowls of soup and Bolo do Caco, with homemade flavors and very affordable prices.
One of the highlights is the two types of Madeiran nativity scenes on display.
As I mentioned before, the traditional crib recreates Madeira’s characteristic landscape, with its terraces, valleys, vegetation and typical houses and haystacks, representing the island’s connection with nature and its rural way of life.
The ladder crib, on the other hand, is an altar in the shape of a ladder, with the baby Jesus placed at the top.

Visit the Christmas Village
Aldeia Natal is located in Praça do Município and is a safe place for children to have an incredible Christmas experience.
There are lots of free amusements there, such as the carousel, the train, magic shows, live artisans, the arrival of Santa Claus, as well as popcorn and cotton candy every day.
There’s also a post office if your children want to leave a letter for Santa.
Although my children were already older and didn’t enjoy it much, I found the space welcoming and very well thought out.

New Year’s Eve in Madeira
Talking about New Year’s Eve in Madeira is synonymous with fireworks, right?
After all, the investment in this night is huge! We’re talking about 52 fireworks stations placed at different points in the bay of Funchal, resulting in a spectacle of light and color that makes the news not only in Portugal but also on television in other countries!
And to give you an idea of the scale of the show, it’s 6 km long and 2.7 km wide and is lit up for 8 minutes!
So I think it’s fair to say that it’s a memorable show!

Where is the best place to see fireworks in Madeira?
I’ll do my best to give you all the information you need to make a decision about the best place to see the fireworks in Madeira.
So, considering that the fireworks leave from the Bay of Funchal and will light up that area, one of the best places to see them is on Avenida do Mar.
The good news is that Avenida do Mar, or Avenida do Mar e das Comunidades Madeirenses, is 1,300 meters long, which means it’s very long.
But the bad news is that many people, including tourists and locals, choose Avenida do Mar to watch the New Year’s Eve fireworks in Madeira.
What some locals do to escape the crowds is to take their cars to the old road that connects Funchal to the airport.
It’s true that from the highway you also have a clear view of Funchal Bay, but, as you may realize, parking is not allowed here.

Where to spend the year in Madeira?
There are plenty of places to spend the New Year in Madeira Island, but the main choice you have to make is how much money you’re willing to spend.
So, if budget isn’t an obstacle for you, my recommendations include New Year’s Eve cruises or a party in a luxury hotel.
The Castanheiro Boutique Hotel (4 stars), for example, has Dinner & Show and Drink & Show packages to enter 2026 in style.
Also, Barceló Funchal Old Town (5 stars) has two New Year’s Eve suggestions: Gala Dinner and Fireworks and Gala Buffet and Fireworks.
However, if you’re on a more modest budget, don’t worry because street entertainment is guaranteed in the center of Funchal.
So, as well as the free fireworks, you can enjoy live music throughout the city.
