Here’s my honest opinion about whether it’s worth opting for shore excursions and tours organized by cruises.
One of the big questions that arise when planning a cruise is whether it’s worth opting for the excursions offered by the ship. As someone who has experienced both sides, I have an honest opinion to share with you.
The decision to participate in ship-organized excursions or to venture independently can depend on various personal and logistical factors.
On one hand, organized excursions offer the convenience and security of knowing you won’t be left behind. Imagine getting delayed in traffic or getting lost while exploring an unfamiliar city – the ship won’t wait for you.
Choosing an organized excursion eliminates this stress, as the ship ensures all participants are back on board before departure. Additionally, these excursions are often led by experienced guides, providing extra educational value to your visit.
On the other hand, exploring independently can be more economical and flexible. Some cities are easy to explore on your own, and hiring a taxi or joining other travelers can offer a more personalized experience at your own pace.
In this article, I will cover the main points to consider when making this decision. Each option has its advantages and disadvantages, and the right choice will depend on your specific needs and personal preferences.
The goal is to ensure you have the best possible experience during your cruise, whether taking ship-organized tours or discovering places independently. Shall we dive in?
Is It Worth Opting for Ship-Organized Excursions? Choose Shore Excursions

Your Cruise Won’t Leave Without You
One of the key reasons to consider whether it’s worth opting for shore excursions organized by cruises is the assurance that your ship won’t depart without you onboard.
Imagine being delayed in traffic, having an accident, or getting lost. These things happen. The ship will depart the port at the scheduled time, and it will be up to you to arrange alternate transportation to the next stop. Now, imagine the next stop is in a different country – quite a problem, right?
By opting for a ship-organized excursion, you have the guarantee that it won’t leave before you re-embark. These organized excursions provide that extra security. The crew is in constant communication with the excursion guides. Therefore, if there is any delay, the ship waits for its passengers. This peace of mind is invaluable.
Additionally, ship-offered excursions are typically well-organized and led by professionals. This means you’ll have a rich and informative experience without any logistical worries.
The excursions include comfortable transportation, experienced guides, and often entry to tourist attractions without queues. The convenience of having everything planned is a significant advantage.
Another point to consider is safety. In unfamiliar destinations, it’s common not to know which areas to avoid or how to get around safely.
On ship excursions, passenger safety is a priority. The itineraries are chosen to maximize safety and provide a positive experience. This reduces stress and allows you to make the most of your time onshore.

You Have the Expertise of a Specialized Guide
Some people believe that taxi drivers make excellent guides, and I agree. They often know incredible stories about the places we visit and can give tips on shops and restaurants that no one else would tell you.
However, if you’re a history enthusiast wanting to visit the Acropolis in Greece, a taxi driver might not be much help beyond dropping you off at the monument.
The guides who accompany groups are like walking encyclopedias there for your benefit. These specialized guides have a deep knowledge of the places you visit. They are prepared to answer all your questions and provide detailed and accurate information. Leveraging their expertise can turn your trip into a much more enriching experience.
Furthermore, tour guides often have privileged access to certain areas or information that the average tourist does not. This means your visit will be more complete and satisfying.
Another advantage of having a specialized guide is time management. Guides know exactly how much time is needed for each attraction and can efficiently manage the itinerary. This allows you to make the most of every minute of your excursion without worrying about logistical details.
The presence of a guide also adds an extra layer of safety. They are familiar with the locations and know how to handle unforeseen situations. If any problem arises, you will have a professional by your side to assist.

No Additional Expenses on Excursions
One of the great advantages of the excursions organized by the cruise ship is that everything is included in the price. From the moment you leave the ship until you return, there are no additional expenses for transportation, guides, or entry fees, unless otherwise specified.
Imagine the peace of mind knowing you won’t need to take out your wallet to pay for tickets or transport. This means you can enjoy your tour without financial worries. You only need to spend money if you want to buy a souvenir or try a local delicacy.
Additionally, transportation and guides are already paid for, ensuring everything runs smoothly and is well-organized.
This eliminates the stress of having to find transportation or guides at the destination. You will always be accompanied by experienced professionals who know exactly how to make your visit enjoyable.
One exception to this rule is tipping the guide. While not mandatory, it is always appreciated and generally welcomed.
So, if you enjoyed the service provided, leave a tip for the guide.
Another positive aspect is transparency. You will know exactly how much you are spending from the start. There will be no unpleasant surprises at the end of the excursion. This predictability makes the experience more relaxing and allows you to enjoy the trip without worries.
Therefore, the excursions organized by the cruise ship are a convenient and hassle-free option for exploring new destinations. With everything included in the price, you can focus on enjoying the trip to the fullest without additional financial concerns.
However, as with everything in life, there are some downsides to the shore excursions organized by cruise ships

Disadvantages of Buying Shore Excursions and Tours Organized by Cruise Ships
While cruise ship organized tours offer many advantages, as mentioned earlier, there are also some drawbacks to consider before deciding.
So, now is the time to explore some of the disadvantages of opting for these excursions. And let me tell you, these are significant negative aspects!
High Prices of Tours
Tours organized by cruise ships tend to be significantly more expensive than options you can find on your own. Differences can be 50% or more, based on my experience.
This is because cruise companies apply a markup on the services offered, which can inflate the final price considerably.
Therefore, if you are traveling on a tight budget, this is an important factor to consider.
Less Flexibility of Shore Excursions
By participating in an organized excursion, you must follow the schedule and itinerary set by the cruise company. And except for very rare situations, there’s no way around this point.
This means less freedom to explore at your own pace and fewer opportunities for spontaneous detours.
This situation can lead to feeling rushed and unable to fully enjoy the places visited.
However, from my experience, guides do their best to accommodate tourists’ requests.
For example, if you politely ask if you can take a photo in a more secluded spot or if you can grab an ice cream in a few minutes, you’ll only receive a negative response if it’s truly not possible.

Large Group Tours and Shore Excursions
This is a point that particularly displeases me, as organized tours typically involve large groups of tourists.
This can result in queues to enter sites, difficulty hearing the guide, and a less personalized experience.
In other words, if you prefer a more intimate and tranquil environment, these tours may not be the best option.

Standardized Tour and Shore Excursions Experience
Another major disadvantage is the fact that everything is the same! Ship-organized excursions tend to follow a standard itinerary, visiting the most popular and touristy places.
While these locations are usually spectacular, you will likely miss out on the opportunity to discover hidden gems and have a more authentic experience.
Therefore, if you value more authentic experiences, I believe independent travel is more suitable for you, as it allows you to explore lesser-known areas and enjoy a richer cultural experience.

Less Interaction with Local Culture
When you participate in an organized tour, you have fewer opportunities to interact with local residents.
And when the experience is part of the itinerary, it can feel forced.
In fact, the rigid itinerary and fast-paced nature of the visits mean that you will spend most of your time with other tourists.
If you value interaction with local culture and want to get to know the people and customs of the destination, you may feel restricted on these tours.

Risk of Cancellations of Shore Excursions
Although rare, there is always the possibility that the excursion may be canceled due to adverse weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.
In fact, this happened to us on a Caribbean cruise when the tour we had chosen was canceled due to bad weather.
It’s important to note that in this case, the cruise company offered us alternatives. Additionally, they refunded us the price difference because the alternative tour we took was cheaper than the one we had originally booked. They also provided lunch during the tour.
Therefore, I can’t say that we were left at a disadvantage.

Tips for Making the Best Shore Excursion Choices
Evaluate What’s Important to You
If you’re someone who gets anxious about leaving the ship on your own, especially worrying about being late, opting for ship-organized excursions might be less stressful. Additionally, if you’re traveling with elderly individuals who tire easily or with children, it can be more comfortable and reassuring to choose ship-offered excursions. Therefore, consider saving in other areas and investing in organized excursions to ensure your peace of mind.
Research Options in Advance
Research the available excursion options ahead of time and see if some can be comfortably done independently. For instance, in Santorini, we visited several sites through a ship excursion. However, we could have visited the same places more economically and at our own pace by renting a taxi. The key is knowing exactly what you want to visit and negotiating the price to avoid unpleasant surprises.
Join Other Travelers
Traveling in a group can be advantageous. Besides potentially sharing the taxi cost, there’s a good chance of meeting someone who is familiar with the area, essentially providing you with a private guide. This is a great way to reduce costs and enrich the experience with local insights from someone who knows the area well.

Final Note on Whether to Choose Ship Excursions or Independent Exploration
Is it worth it to take ship excursions or explore independently? The answer varies.
In some situations, ship excursions are more convenient and secure, while in others, opting to explore on your own can be more economical and flexible.
Each port has its own characteristics, and the best choice depends on your needs and preferences.
What really matters, in my opinion, is having the best possible experience, whether on an organized excursion or an independent adventure. I hope this helps!
