If you’re thinking about visiting the Bath Christmas Market, then you’re in the right place! In 2025, the Bath Christmas Market celebrates its 25th anniversary, so it’s the perfect excuse to plan a weekend in Bath.
Few cities in the UK capture the Christmas spirit with as much elegance as Bath. The glowing cobblestone streets, Georgian architecture, and the sound of choirs by Abbey Churchyard create a scene that feels straight out of an old postcard.
The Bath Christmas Market is one of the most famous and award-winning in the country. It’s bigger than Bristol’s — with 200 wooden chalets (Bristol has 40) — yet it still keeps a warm and welcoming charm.
Anyone who visits quickly understands why, as the whole city transforms into a festive setting, and the market is only the beginning.
I only spent one day in the city, and that was a big mistake, because Bath has so much to offer at Christmas beyond its famous Christmas market.
Shall we explore the best of Bath during the festive season?

Where is the Bath Christmas Market and when does it take place?
The market is set up in Bath’s historic centre, between Bath Abbey and the Roman Baths, spreading across several pedestrian streets such as Abbeygate Street, York Street and Stall Street.
The atmosphere is entirely pedestrian, which means you can explore at a relaxed pace, without traffic or car noise.
It usually takes place from late November to mid-December, with free entry. The exact dates vary each year, but the market typically lasts around three weeks.
In any case, I’ve included the updated dates and opening times for this year’s Christmas Market at the beginning of the article.
One of the biggest advantages is its location: Bath Spa train station is less than a 10-minute walk away. For those coming from London, there are direct trains that take around 1 hour and 30 minutes.

What to Expect at the Bath Christmas Market
The market features more than 200 wooden chalets, beautifully decorated and lined up along the narrow streets surrounding the cathedral. Many stalls are run by local producers from the southwest of England, which ensures both variety and quality.
You’ll find British crafts, scented candles, regional delicacies, handmade jewellery, studio pottery and uniquely designed Christmas decorations. Each stall tells a different story, and it’s easy to lose track of time while watching the artisans at work.
The food and drink area is one of the highlights. The smell of mulled wine, hot cider, British sausages, cheddar cheese and chocolate brownies fills the streets. One of the classics is the pork roll with apple sauce, simple and delicious.
Many visitors like to grab a snack while listening to live music. The market has several small stages where local choirs and jazz groups perform, creating a warm and cheerful atmosphere.

What to Do in Bath at Christmas
Bath is a beautiful city at any time of year, but at Christmas it gains a truly unique atmosphere. Besides the market, there are several experiences that make a visit even more special.
1. Stroll Through the Bath Christmas Market
It’s the heart of the festive celebrations. The streets around Bath Abbey fill with lights, music and winter scents. Even if you’re not planning to buy anything, you’ll enjoy the atmosphere and the decorations.

2. Visit Bath Abbey Decorated for Christmas
The cathedral stands right in the centre of the market, and it’s impossible to miss. During the festive season, there are choir concerts and organ recitals that are well worth attending. It’s also a great place to warm up and appreciate the beauty of the building.
Relax in Bath’s Thermal Baths with a View Over the Illuminated City
Thermae Bath Spa offers a unique experience: outdoor thermal pools overlooking Bath’s rooftops glowing with Christmas lights. It’s a perfect way to end the day after hours of walking in the cold.
Bath has been famous for its thermal waters since Roman times. In winter, nothing feels better than sinking into the warm outdoor pools at Thermae Bath Spa, with the Abbey tower in sight.
It’s an unforgettable experience, especially at dusk, when the steam rises and the city lights begin to shine.

4. Admire the Lights at the Royal Crescent and Pulteney Bridge
The Christmas lights highlight the Georgian buildings of the Royal Crescent and the elegance of Pulteney Bridge, one of the few inhabited bridges in the world.
Both spots are just a short walk from the city centre and are worth visiting at night.
Overall, the streets of Bath are like an open-air museum.

5. Step into a Traditional Pub and Try a Hot Cider
Bath has cosy pubs full of history. The Raven of Bath, The Salamander and The Crystal Palace, for example, are great choices for dinner or simply to warm your hands with a glass of mulled cider, the most popular hot drink in the region.

6. Discover Historic Bakeries and Tearooms
The cold is a perfect excuse to step into one of the city’s many charming cafés. Sally Lunn’s, for example, is considered the oldest building in Bath and serves the famous “buns”, a cross between brioche and sweet bread, invented in the 17th century.
Additionally, The Pump Room, adjacent to the Roman Baths, remains a classic for afternoon tea, with live music and views over the historic heart of the city.

The Atmosphere and Experience
The Bath Christmas Market combines the grandeur of an international event with the hospitality of a small town. There are tourists from all over the world, yet the atmosphere remains relaxed and genuine.
During the day, the market has a vibrant energy, with natural light highlighting the golden tones of the façades. In the evening, however, the lights multiply, and the illuminated Bath Abbey creates an unforgettable scene.
It’s not uncommon to hear a choir singing “Silent Night” while a light drizzle falls, simple moments that perfectly capture the spirit of a British Christmas.

Why It’s Worth Visiting Bath at Christmas
Bath is a city that knows how to celebrate winter without losing its elegance. Here, Christmas is not just about lights and shopping, it’s a celebration of history, culture, and the simple pleasure of being in a place with soul.
Between the warmth of the thermal baths, the sound of the choir at the Abbey, and the scent of cinnamon from the market stalls, it’s impossible not to be swept up in the festive spirit.
And, perhaps without even noticing, those who visit Bath at Christmas become part of a long-standing tradition: bringing people together around beauty, art, and hospitality.

Practical Tips for Visiting Bath at Christmas
Getting there: There are direct flights from most european citys to London or Bristol. From there, you can catch a direct train to Bath (about 15 minutes from Bristol). Those coming from London can take the Great Western Railway from Paddington Station (1h30).
Where to stay: Accommodation fills up quickly in December. Good options in the city centre include Abbey Hotel Bath, Harington’s Boutique Hotel, and The Z Hotel Bath. I stayed in Bristol, about 10 minutes by train, at the ibis Bristol Centre, and I recommend it.
Best time to visit: The market is quieter on weekday mornings. In the late afternoon, the lights and music create the perfect atmosphere, but it’s also busier.
Weather: Average temperatures range between 2 °C and 7 °C. The cold is damp, so waterproof shoes and layers are recommended.
