Here’s everything you need to know about Aigra Nova Schist Village: its location, how to get there, what to see, restaurants, accommodation, and trails to explore this region of Serra da Lousã.

Aigra Nova belongs to the municipality of Góis (Coimbra district), in the Beira Litoral region.

It is part of the Schist Villages Network and is classified as a Site of Community Importance – Serra da Lousã, within the Natura 2000 Network.

A distinctive feature of Aigra Nova is that it has a tree nursery, in fact, it is the only village in Portugal where you can sponsor a tree.

Moreover, the village itself is composed of three narrow streets, which also sets it apart from other schist villages.

The list of heritage sites to visit includes the Schist Traditions Ecomuseum, the Environmental Interpretation Center, the fountain, the Schist Village Shop, and suggestive places like the Fonte dos Namorados (Lovers’ Fountain).

So, are you joining us on this journey through another schist village in the Serra da Lousã?

Our ritual upon arriving at the Schist Villages in Portugal is almost always the same: park the car and walk, without big plans and with the camera in hand.

We go without prejudices, with eyes wide open, without an itinerary, with time, and we appreciate what the place offers us.

Almost always we end the visit with a smile on our faces. I love the tranquility of these villages, as well as the simplicity of life.

So, in Aigra Nova, it was no different, and in a few minutes, we were in the company of friendly dogs, who came to greet us.

It wasn’t difficult to find the Ecomuseum Traditions of Schist, as well as the Environmental Interpretation Center, the fountain, the Fountain of Lovers, and the Schist Village Shop, which includes a cafeteria and restrooms.

People settled in this place most likely because of a spring that exists in the upper part of the village.

This water is still used today to irrigate the agricultural fields that are in the lower part of the village and to give water to the cattle.

Anyway, a very enjoyable afternoon that left us with very happy memories.

For a different experience, we suggest staying at least one night in the village of Aigra Nova, and my recommendation is the Casa da Aigra or the Casa dos Avós.

Both accommodations are located within the village, so I believe it will be an excellent stay.
