At this time of year, the city becomes an ideal December getaway, thanks to its festive lights, Christmas markets, the smell of roasted chestnuts in the air, and the constant sound of the sea.
I visit A Coruña quite often, but I had never been there at Christmas before.
It didn’t take long to realize that this is not an over-the-top or artificial Christmas destination.
Here, Christmas is lived outdoors: in busy cafés, illuminated squares, and long, unhurried conversations.

It’s not a huge or overly touristy market. It’s a space designed for both locals and visitors, where people stroll at an easy pace, holding a warm drink, taking in the lights and listening to Christmas music in the background.

A Coruña’s Christmas lights are one of the city’s main highlights at this time of year. They stretch across several central areas, from Avenida da Marina to the Old Town, creating a pleasant route to explore on foot.

In the marina area, by the port, there are large-scale Christmas decorations, as well as carousels and a Christmas tree.

It was in this part of the city that I felt the most authentic side of A Coruña, fewer shops, more local life. Cafés were busy, restaurants offered cozy winter menus, and the pace felt distinctly local.

Tower of Hercules in Winter
This time I didn’t climb the Tower of Hercules, but it remains A Coruña’s iconic landmark and the oldest Roman lighthouse still in operation in the world.
Classified as a UNESCO World Heritage site, visiting it is still a must, even in winter.
At Christmas, I imagine the surroundings are even more beautiful, with subtle lights illuminating the lighthouse.

Winter is a great time to explore Galician cuisine, and A Coruña doesn’t disappoint. Warm dishes, fresh seafood, and traditional recipes are all part of the experience.
During my visit, I enjoyed tasting tapas, shellfish, and typical seasonal desserts—both at the Christmas market and in local restaurants.
Sweets stand out, including turrón, churros, convent-style pastries, and hot chocolate. Many restaurants offer special holiday menus, but always keeping the local character.
Eating in A Coruña at Christmas is cozy, authentic, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Choosing the right place to stay makes all the difference on a winter trip. In A Coruña, I recommend looking for accommodation in the city center or near the Marina. Other nearby options include Betanzos, with its fascinating historic center, and Santiago de Compostela, which is calmer in winter. Even with its Christmas Market, the city can be explored without large crowds.
